Regulation of Nursing Home Administrators

The Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing staffs the nursing home administrator program. The Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development adopts regulations to carry out laws governing nursing home administrators in Alaska. It makes final licensing decisions and takes disciplinary actions against people who violate licensing laws.

Fraud Alert: Impersonation of Licensing Unit or Licensing Investigations Unit

We have received reports of fraudulent communications from people claiming to be investigators or licensing examiners in our office. These include fraudulent emails asking for documents through a provided link, calls from “investigators” stating a licensee’s name is associated with criminal activity, and even calls followed by convincing license action letters.

If you receive such a call, please consider hanging up and calling our Investigations Unit at (907) 269-8124 to confirm legitimacy.

If you receive such an email, do not click the link or respond – we will never send you a link to upload your documents through.

If you are unsure of the legitimacy of the communication you received and wish to double check with our office, you can also contact our Investigations Unit via email at [email protected]. Please be sure to include your full name, license number, and a brief description of your inquiry.

Information Regarding Required Examinations

Attention Exam Candidates and Prospective Examinees: The National Association of Long Term Care Administrator Boards (NAB) has transitioned its examinations to a new structure where online applications must be filed through the new online application system, Clarus. Examinees for licensure as a licensed nursing home administrator will need to pass a 110-item “core of knowledge” section and a 55-item line of service section that are administered through PSI services. NAB’s examinations test for entry-level knowledge in long term care administration. The Nursing Home Administrator Exam (NHA) has been developed and administered by NAB for decades and is taken by over 2,000 candidates across the nation annually.

All applicants seeking first-time licensure via examination in Alaska must first submit an initial application (form #08-4020) to the department to request approval to apply for the NHA Examination.

Paper Application

If you are seeking approval of an Administrator-in-Training (AIT) program as required in 12 AAC 46.041, you must submit a Nursing Home Administrator application (form #08-4020), application fee, and the AIT Program Proposal form (#08-4020b included in the application packet) and receive approval from the department before beginning the program.

Statutes and Regulations

Alaska Statutes are passed by the legislature. Regulations (also called the Alaska Administrative Code) are rules adopted by the department to implement, interpret, and make specific the statutes. Both statutes and regulations have the force of law.

AS 08.70 and regulations 12 AAC 46 specifically apply to nursing home administrators. AS 08.01 - 08.03 and regulations 12 AAC 02 apply to all professions regulated by the division.

Proposed regulations are advertised in Alaska newspapers and we invite public comment on them. If you would like to receive notice of all proposed regulation changes for your program, please send a request in writing with your name, preferred contact method (mail or email), and the program you want to be updated on to:
