wordcli — AI Word CLI / DOCX Generator from Natural-Language Prompts

wordcli turns a written prompt into a real, editable .docx document — no templates, no manual formatting, no Word app required. wordcli is the Word document generator inside the OfficeCLI toolkit, distributed as a single cross-platform binary on npm and Homebrew.

npm Source Discord Website

Install

npm install -g officecli

Or via Homebrew:

brew install officecli/homebrew-officecli/officecli

Pick one channel. If you previously installed via Homebrew and now want npm, uninstall the Homebrew formula first. Full install guide: officecli/officecli.

After install, the first run uses hosted anonymous trial access — no API key, no local model endpoint needed.

Generate a Word document from a prompt

officecli new docx "Product Launch Brief" \
--prompt "Audience, positioning, key messages, launch timeline, risk register, next steps."

What wordcli does under that single command:

  • Plans the document structure from your prompt (headings, sections, lists)
  • Writes a real .docx file to ./output/ — editable in Word, Pages, Google Docs, and WPS
  • Optionally returns a public preview URL when online publishing is configured

More examples

From a prompt file

officecli new docx "Architecture RFC" --prompt-file ./rfc.txt

Higher-quality interactive mode

officecli new docx "Annual Strategy Memo" --mode best

Custom output directory

officecli new docx "Spec" --prompt-file ./spec.txt --out ./dist

JSON output for automation / CI

officecli new docx "Weekly Update" --prompt-file ./w.txt --json

Skip online publish (local only)

officecli new docx "Internal Draft" --prompt "..." --no-publish

Full command reference: officecli/officecli → Command Cheatsheet.

What wordcli is built for

  • Product managers turning bullet notes into a PRD or launch brief
  • Engineers drafting RFCs, design docs, and runbooks from an outline
  • Founders producing investor memos and one-pagers on demand
  • Consultants scaffolding client deliverables from a brief
  • Marketing producing positioning docs and messaging guides
  • HR / Ops drafting policies and SOPs from a description
  • Engineering teams auto-generating release notes and status memos in CI
  • AI agents / Claude Code plugins that need to emit .docx artifacts programmatically

Claude Code marketplace plugin

OfficeCLI ships as an official Claude Code marketplace plugin, so agents can generate .docx files directly from inside Claude Code:

/plugin marketplace add officecli/officecli
/plugin install officecli@officecli

Details: officecli/officecli → Claude Marketplace Install.

Hosted vs external runtime

  • Hosted (default) — fastest path. Free trial on first install, then officecli login and buy hosted credits at officecli.io/pricing. login prints a URL and short code, so it works in headless / remote shells too.

  • External — point wordcli at your own model endpoint:

    officecli config set-runtime external
    officecli config set-generation
