Closes #451

Summary

  • add one encrypted, profile-scoped normalized-name reservation index and commit it atomically with Custom Category family records, deletion tombstones, and the retained legacy mirror
  • retry conditional conflicts so concurrent creates and renames allow exactly one normalized name to succeed, while ambiguous committed responses remain safely retryable
  • deterministically reconcile pre-index duplicate or System Category names without dropping Category records, and keep default and non-default Mail Profile scopes isolated
  • document the Product Sync contract and add a patch changeset

Validation

Passed:

  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh
  • mise exec -- pnpm format
  • five focused Mac Catalyst acceptance tests, including concurrent create/rename, lost-response recovery, rename/delete release, deterministic backfill, and Profile isolation
  • 20 iterations of CustomCategorySyncServiceTests.concurrentDevicesAllowOneConflictingRename()
  • complete CustomCategorySyncServiceTests on iPhone 17 Simulator D6D43A14-3B1A-41B6-B25A-0DFCA1BFB089 (iOS 26.5)
  • required Release build and testGmailFirstReleaseCachedPresentationMeetsPerformanceBudgets() fixture on the same Simulator

Failed:

  • mise exec -- pnpm mail:test run core-mail-loop --json failed twice at MailTestBootstrapUITests.testOpenMessageThroughVisibleClient(): the semantic mail-thread-row never appeared and the UI remained on “Making recent mail available…”. The harness doctor returned findings: []. The Mail Test bootstrap injects MailTestCustomCategorySyncService, so this failure does not execute the changed Category Product Sync service.

Remaining human action

  • investigate or rerun the required Core Mail Loop gate before merge; do not merge while that gate remains failing

Complete the required Apple validation before merge.

Apple tooling was unavailable in this review. This review did not run SwiftLint strict mode, Swift Format strict linting, or xcodebuild tests.

The PR objective reports that the Core Mail Loop gate failed during bootstrap because a mail-thread row was absent. Resolve that failure, or rerun the gate successfully, before merge.

Run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh. Then run the repository-documented xcodebuild test command.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Enforces atomic, profile-scoped uniqueness for normalized Custom Category names across trusted devices.
  • Commits encrypted reservation indexes, category records, deletion tombstones, and the legacy mirror in one conditional Product Sync transaction.
  • Retries conditional conflicts and ambiguous committed responses during concurrent creates and renames.
  • Reconciles existing duplicate and System Category names without deleting categories.
  • Keeps default and non-default Mail Profile reservations isolated.
  • Adds a patch changeset for unwired-mail.

Affected areas

  • Apple / Swift: CustomCategorySyncService manages atomic writes, retries, deletion, migration, reconciliation, validation, cancellation, and reservation recovery.
  • Apple / Swift: MailboxConnectionSyncService includes reservation payloads when copying categories and rejects destination name conflicts.
  • Apple / Swift tests: Added coverage for concurrent reservations, rename conflicts, lost-response recovery, legacy reconciliation, malformed data, cancellation, profile isolation, and category-copy conflicts.
  • TypeScript: No TypeScript files changed.
  • Documentation: Updated the Categories README and Product Sync ADR with the reservation and reconciliation contract.

Privacy and security

  • Reservation indexes remain encrypted and scoped to each Mail Profile.
  • Product Sync encryption, key lookup, associated data, transport, and conflict-retry responsibilities remain at the synchronization boundary.

Migration and configuration

  • Loading backfills missing reservation indexes.
  • Existing duplicate or System Category names are deterministically renamed with a Custom suffix without category loss.
  • No configuration changes are required.

Validation

  • Focused tests, concurrency iterations, the complete CustomCategorySyncService suite, linting, formatting, and Release validation passed.
  • The Core Mail Loop gate failed because a mail-thread row did not appear during bootstrap. Investigate or rerun this gate before merge.

Walkthrough

Custom Category synchronization now uses a profile-scoped encrypted reservation index. Category mutations and mailbox category copies use bounded atomic Product Sync transactions. Loading reconciles legacy duplicates and reserved-name collisions deterministically while preserving categories.

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to 64d82

This change moves Custom Category writes to atomic name reservations and reconciliation, but the current head still has a failing required Core Mail Loop gate and unresolved paths that can drop categories, release names, leave stale results, mishandle committed retries, or block a profile. Merge should be blocked until these issues are resolved or explicitly accepted.

Clear the background categorization cache before loadCategories can commit reconciliation writes.

loadCategories can persist name reservations, legacy migration, or deterministic renames, but it does not clear backgroundContextCacheStore. Background categorization can therefore use stale category names. Add a focused regression test.

syncRemainedBusy is already surfaced by AccountView and causes background notification categorization to return the original messages.

Use a distinct trustedDeviceId for the second rename.

Both rename operations use session, so both services use the same trusted-device identity. This test does not model two distinct trusted devices like the concurrent-save test does.

Create a second session with a different trustedDeviceId and pass it to secondRename.

Retry typed ambiguous atomic-write failures.

This loop retries only when the transport returns committed == false. If the atomic operation commits and then throws, the error exits the loop. CommitThenFailProductSyncTransport exercises this path, so saveCategory reports failure even though the category, reservation, and legacy writes are committed.

Add an explicit ambiguous-commit result or error. Re-read authoritative state and retry that case. Keep non-retryable errors fail-fast.

As per PR objectives: ambiguous committed responses must be retried.

Reject empty category IDs before writing reservations.

normalizedCategory accepts category.id == "". CustomCategoryNameReservationPayload then writes an empty categoryId, but validateNameReservations rejects that value on the next read. A caller can therefore poison the profile with one successful save and make later category operations fail.

CustomCategorySyncServiceTests.swift omits recordScope at lines 307, 311, 343, 347, 379, 422, and 425. Pass .legacyProductAccount at each call or add an intended default to the initializer. The test target will not compile otherwise.

592-604: Still unresolved: malformed reservation data blocks category access.

stableSnapshot still throws when the reservation payload is malformed. One corrupt or foreign index can block every category load and write instead of allowing the derived index to be rebuilt.

761-768: Still unresolved: invalid category records are silently dropped.

try? validatedCategory(...) followed by continue removes undecodable or invalid records from the loaded result and from the rebuilt reservation index. This can release a name and permit a duplicate.

300-398: Still missing malformed-reservation and cancellation coverage.

The suite does not test invalid reservation schema, duplicate reservation identifiers or names, non-normalized names, or cancellation before the snapshot and before the atomic write.

As per path instructions: “Verify externally observable behavior, privacy invariants, error paths, cancellation or restart behavior where relevant, and deterministic isolation.”

Investigate or rerun the required Core Mail Loop gate before merge. The gate failed twice while opening a message, leaving the UI on “Making recent mail available…”. Although the reported failure does not exercise the changed Category Product Sync path, merge should wait for a successful rerun or an explicit owner decision.

Write reconciled category records in the copy transaction. categoryCopyWrites can rename existing categories but returns writes only for copied records and the reservation payload. transferConnection adds no writes for those renames. A commit can therefore persist All while reserving only all (custom). Add writes for changed reconciled categories and include them in transaction-size validation. Add a transfer test for this case.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Gmail/MessageCategorizationService.swift`, `GmailMessageCategorizationService.classificationCategories(learningSignalSenderAddresses:session:)` must clear the combined background categorization cache when loading future learning signals fails because authentication is unavailable. The cache combines custom-category state (including explicit absence) with exact-sender learning signals; retaining it after a partial authenticated refresh could reuse stale category context. Background notification categorization must fail closed in this case.
