Closes #411

Summary

  • add device-local, Product Account- and Mail Profile-scoped Mail Assistance enablement that defaults off and is cleared during account teardown
  • add Account Settings presentation with explicit availability checking and specific on-device unavailability explanations
  • centralize assistance lifecycle state so disabling, Profile switching, and Profile Lock cancel work and destroy retained requests and previews without restoring them after unlock
  • document the device-local privacy boundary and add focused Swift Testing coverage for device/Profile isolation, explicit invocation, availability, resource failure, Quiet, locking, and reauthentication

Validation

  • PASS: xcrun swift-format lint --strict for every touched Swift file
  • PASS: mise exec -- swiftlint lint --strict --no-cache for every touched Swift file (0 violations)
  • PASS: plutil -lint apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj
  • PASS: git diff --check
  • PASS: iOS build-for-testing on verified iPhone 17 / iOS 26.5 Simulator UDID D6D43A14-3B1A-41B6-B25A-0DFCA1BFB089
  • PASS: focused Mac Catalyst MailAssistanceEnablementTests with code signing disabled
  • UNAVAILABLE: focused iOS test-without-building did not start XCTest because testmanagerd's reported Unix-domain socket was absent: /private/var/tmp/com.apple.launchd.Q3EF2cCfuL/com.apple.testmanagerd.unix-domain.socket
  • KNOWN BASELINE FAILURE: mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh reaches all touched files without findings, then reports the pre-existing function_body_length violation in BlockedSenderSyncService.swift:516 (51 lines); the sandboxed formatter also cannot write its external cache plist

Remaining human action

None beyond normal review. Hosted Apple CI should provide the iOS XCTest execution that the local Simulator testmanagerd socket prevented.

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 33 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Added device-local Mail Assistance enablement per Product Account and Mail Profile.
  • Enablement defaults to off, stays out of Product Sync, and clears during account sign-out.
  • Added Account Settings controls with availability checks and device-specific explanations.
  • Cancels assistance and clears prompts, transcripts, and unaccepted previews when assistance is disabled, Profiles switch, or a Profile is locked.
  • Preserves explicit assistance during Quiet State and prevents reauthentication from restoring pre-lock data.
  • Added Swift Testing coverage for scoping, migration defaults, availability, cancellation, locking, reauthentication, previews, resources, and Quiet State.
  • Updated the ADR, README, CONTEXT.md, and release changeset.

Affected areas

  • Apple: SwiftUI account settings, Mail Assistance view model and persistence, Product Account session cleanup, Xcode project configuration, and Swift tests.
  • TypeScript: No TypeScript areas changed.

Validation

  • Formatting, linting, project-file validation, diff checks, iOS build-for-testing, and focused Mac Catalyst tests passed.
  • Local iOS XCTest execution was unavailable because the testmanagerd socket was missing.
  • Apple lint reported a pre-existing violation in BlockedSenderSyncService.swift.

Walkthrough

Mail Assistance now supports device-local, per-profile enablement. It includes persisted settings, availability checks, explicit preview generation, Profile Lock cancellation, sensitive-state cleanup, Account Settings integration, sign-out cleanup, and focused tests.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6023a

The PR adds device-local, per-account and Mail Profile-scoped Mail Assistance controls with lock and teardown cleanup, but failed sign-out paths may leave enablement retained and startup/profile restoration may briefly allow assistance under the wrong profile or lock state. Merge readiness is moderate until cleanup and initial gating are made explicit or accepted by the owner.

P2 Badge Keep availability checks behind the button

When an already-enabled Profile opens this settings screen, this task automatically calls the engine's availability API without the person selecting “Check Availability.” That contradicts the newly documented behavior that availability is checked only explicitly; enabling the preference and later revisiting Settings now causes an implicit system-model capability check. Remove the automatic task and leave the check on the button action.

Not addressed: the fix in 141a6b8 lacks clean supporting required CI because the exact-head Apple gates remain failing. Leaving open pending passing exact-head required Actions.

Clear Mail Assistance enablement before fallible preference cleanup.

Lines 1643-1645 can throw before Line 1646 runs. This leaves a persisted opt-in after the session is cleared. A later sign-in for the same Product Account and Mail Profile can restore enablement that must have been cleared during account removal.

Move the non-throwing enablement clear immediately after sessionStore.clear(). Add a teardown test with a failing preference store.

Guard stale mute operations after profile changes.

load and setMuted mutate view-model state after an await without the full revision and cancellation guard used by reconcile. After updateProfile, a late setMuted failure executes setMutedLocally with the new profileId and can reinsert an old-profile mute into the new profile. Capture the starting profile and revision. Ignore late results and rollbacks. Check cancellation before load applies its result.

Confirm cleanup ordering for failed sign-out paths.

mailAssistanceEnablementStore.clear runs after clearLocalProductAccountData and try sessionStore.clear(). If either earlier operation throws, resumePendingSignOut exits before this line and the per-account enablement remains until a later retry. Confirm that pending sign-out always retries this path and that retaining the setting during a failed sign-out is acceptable. Otherwise, move the cleanup into a guaranteed, idempotent teardown path and add an earlier-failure test.

1605-1615: 🔒 Security & Privacy

Verify startup and profile-switch gating before unlocking assistance.

mailAssistanceViewModel starts with defaultProfileId and an unconcealed state. Active-profile restoration and interruption-policy loading occur later. Confirm that requests are blocked until the real active profile is bound and that every asynchronous completion still matches the current profile. Otherwise, an early or stale completion can bypass Profile Lock or use the wrong profile.

5270-5281: 🎯 Functional Correctness

Verify multiple .contextMenu modifiers.

The row now attaches one context menu for Mute and another for ThreadSnoozeMenu. Verify that SwiftUI presents both menus. If the later modifier replaces the earlier one, one action is unreachable. Combine both actions into one context menu and cover both actions with a UI test.

8767-8769: 🔒 Security & Privacy

Destroy raw message-source state on dismissal and lock.

onDisappear cancels only copyFeedbackTask; it does not clear source or exportData. loadSource, copySource, and exportSource also perform trust checks across asynchronous boundaries. Verify that Profile Lock cancels these tasks and clears retained raw bytes before the sheet, pasteboard, or exporter remains available. Add focused lock-during-load, copy, and export tests.
