Closes #410

Summary

  • raise every Apple target to iOS, iPadOS, and macOS 26 for Foundation Models availability
  • add a product-owned, input-versioned Mail Assistance engine with an on-device system adapter and deterministic test engine
  • bound already-local mail context, fence untrusted message content, disable tools and prewarming, and map model availability, generation failures, stale input, and cancellation into product states
  • document the privacy boundary, product terms, platform floor, follow-up ownership, and release intent

Validation

  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh — passed; 0 violations in 145 Swift files
  • Catalyst xcodebuild build-for-testing — passed
  • Catalyst focused MailAssistanceEngineTests — passed; 8 tests in 1 suite
  • iOS Simulator xcodebuild build-for-testing with iPhone 17 UDID D6D43A14-3B1A-41B6-B25A-0DFCA1BFB089 — passed
  • plutil -lint apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj — passed
  • git diff --check — passed

The focused iOS Simulator test execution could not start XCTest because the host reported: Failed to establish communication with the test runner. Simulator indicated unix domain socket for testmanagerd ... but no file was found at that path. The build completed successfully, the same focused tests passed on Catalyst, and this was not an assertion failure or an application-preflight Busy error.

TypeScript checks were not run because this change touches only the Apple project, Swift sources/tests, documentation, and its changeset. The broad Core Mail Loop and Release performance fixtures were not selected because this foundation is not wired into mail synchronization, presentation, or performance-sensitive runtime paths.

Remaining human actions

None beyond normal review; GitHub Actions should provide the hosted iOS test result.

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 38 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Added a product-owned, input-versioned MailAssistanceEngine for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, Mac Catalyst, and macOS 26.
  • Added a Foundation Models adapter and deterministic test engine.
  • Added typed operations, capabilities, bounded local context, availability states, cancellation, errors, previews, and stale-input protection.
  • Kept assistance explicitly invoked. Disabled tools and prewarming.
  • Treated mail content as untrusted. Prevented remote data access and mail mutations.
  • Added privacy, platform, terminology, release, and follow-up documentation.
  • Raised Apple deployment targets and updated the Xcode project configuration.
  • No TypeScript areas changed.

Validation

  • Passed linting, builds, focused Catalyst tests, project validation, and diff checks.
  • iOS test execution did not start because of a simulator test-runner communication failure.

Walkthrough

The PR adds an on-device Mail Assistance engine with versioned inputs, bounded context, cancellation, availability states, deterministic testing, Foundation Models integration, and Apple OS 26 deployment requirements.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to d45dc

This PR adds the Mail Assistance foundation, but the current implementation can accept incomplete input revisions and fail to invalidate previews when the admitted source changes, allowing stale assistance results. The input contract also leaves a bounded privacy concern around provider message identifiers, so merge should wait for owner resolution or explicit acceptance.

P2 Badge Require revisions for every admitted input

When a context contains source messages but the caller supplies only an unrelated token such as draftRevision, this || guard accepts the request even though threadRevision is absent. The preview then preserves that partial version, so a later thread change can still compare equal and be reported as .current, allowing stale generated mail to be applied despite the input-binding guarantee documented in docs/adr/0052-keep-mail-assistance-on-device-and-input-bound.md. Validate that each admitted draft, selection, and thread input has its corresponding revision token.

Use the approved Mail Assistance terms and define preview invalidation.

Use On-Device Mail Assistance in product prose instead of Mail Assistance engine. Keep MailAssistanceEngine for the Swift boundary. State that an Assistance Preview becomes invalid when the Mail Profile or source input revision changes.

Suggested wording change
- exposes a product-owned Mail Assistance engine
+ exposes product-owned On-Device Mail Assistance
...
- returns an ephemeral Assistance Preview bound to the exact Mail Profile and input revisions.
+ returns an ephemeral Assistance Preview that becomes invalid when the Mail Profile or source input revision changes.

Cover all input-version components and incomplete combinations.

The stale-preview case changes only draftRevision. It does not verify stale results after selectionRevision or threadRevision changes. The invalid-version loop does not cover versions with exactly two non-nil revisions. Add the two missing stale cases and all three two-field invalid cases.

The MailAssistanceInputVersion contract requires draftRevision, selectionRevision, and threadRevision.

Exercise the source-message count limit.

The test sets maximumSourceMessageCount to 1, but the request contains only one source message. It therefore verifies only the character bound. Add two short source messages while keeping the total character count below 8, then expect the same contextTooLarge error. Extend makeRequest() or construct that request directly.

The context contract defines both character and source-message limits.

As per path instructions, **/*Tests/**/*.swift tests must verify externally observable behavior and privacy invariants.

Make cancellation coverage deterministic.

Task.yield() does not prove that generate(_:) reached .suspendUntilCancelled; cancellation can instead be observed by the pre-generation guard. Add a start signal to DeterministicMailAssistanceEngine and await it before task.cancel(). Do not use a fixed sleep.

Run the required Apple validation before merge.

Apple tooling is unavailable in this review environment, so strict SwiftLint, swift-format, and the documented xcodebuild test command remain unverified. Run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh, then run the documented smallest relevant xcodebuild test command.

As per path instructions, apps/unwired-mail/**/*.{swift,m,mm} changes require formatter, linter, and test commands; zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh must run strict SwiftLint and swift-format, and tests must use the documented xcodebuild test command.
