Closes #400

Summary

  • add profile-scoped, end-to-end encrypted Blocked Sender mutations with deterministic convergence and offline replay
  • expose exact-address block/unblock controls in the conversation reader and Account Settings
  • suppress notifications for newly arriving exact matches and enqueue recoverable Trash actions through each capable, authorized Mailbox Connection
  • document the privacy, recoverability, capability, and non-retroactive behavior and add a patch changeset

Validation

  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh — passed
  • mise exec -- pnpm turbo run lint format check-types test — passed (12/12 tasks)
  • mise exec -- pnpm fallow — passed with zero check issues
  • focused BlockedSenderSyncServiceTests on iPhone 17 UDID D6D43A14-3B1A-41B6-B25A-0DFCA1BFB089 — passed
  • broad Debug Apple tests excluding the split mixed-connection and Release fixture — passed
  • split mixed-connection Debug tests — passed
  • Release build-for-testing and cached-presentation performance fixture — passed
  • mise exec -- pnpm mail:test run core-mail-loop --json — failed twice at MailTestBootstrapUITests.testOpenMessageThroughVisibleClient(): mail-thread-row did not appear within the harness timeout (xcodebuild status 65). This was not a Simulator Busy/preflight failure. The blocked-sender startup work was moved off the critical mailbox-render path after the first failure; the same semantic-row failure remained on the single retry.

Human action

  • investigate or rerun the Core Mail Loop visible-client row failure before marking this PR ready or merging

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 1 minute

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Added profile-scoped, end-to-end encrypted Blocked Sender controls for exact normalized sender addresses.
  • Added block and unblock actions in the conversation reader and Account Settings.
  • For future matching messages, suppressed notifications and queued recoverable moves to Trash on authorized, capable devices.
  • Preserved existing messages and ordinary Trash restoration. Unblocking does not restore moved messages.
  • Added offline replay, deterministic mutation convergence, duplicate-action prevention, retry handling, and per-connection status reporting.
  • Added capability-aware enforcement through existing provider-action adapters for Gmail, Standards-Based mail, Microsoft Graph, and EWS.
  • Kept mailbox credentials and plaintext sender addresses out of the backend.
  • Documented privacy, synchronization, enforcement, and non-retroactive behavior in CONTEXT.md, README.md, and ADR 0051.
  • Added a patch changeset for unwired-mail.

Affected areas

  • Apple: Updated AccountView, mailbox freshness and push relay services, ProductAccountSession, Product Sync, Xcode project configuration, and related tests.
  • TypeScript: No TypeScript areas were changed.

Validation

  • Linting, formatting, type checks, tests, focused sync tests, Apple builds, and performance validation passed.
  • The Core Mail Loop test failed twice because mail-thread-row did not appear within the harness timeout.

Walkthrough

Added profile-scoped Blocked Sender synchronization, local persistence, enforcement for newly synchronized messages, account settings, sender actions, provider integration, tests, and documentation.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to e0812

The PR adds synchronized blocked-sender controls and notification/trash enforcement, but the current head can silently revert a later local block or unblock after receiving a future-dated remote change. Open privacy and notification-filtering concerns remain, and the Core Mail Loop still fails twice, so merge should be blocked pending fixes or explicit owner acceptance.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Features/Account/AccountView.swift`:
- Around line 7895-7917: Update the Provider Enforcement connection rows to
expose an action when a connection is in failedConnectionIds, using the existing
acknowledge-failure behavior and label pattern from MailShellConversationReader.
Pass acknowledgeFailure through the BlockedSendersSettingsView call site and
wire the failed-state action to
mailActionViewModel.acknowledgeFailures(connection:), while preserving the
existing Retry action for pendingConnectionIds.
- Line 2406: Replace the nested Task wrapping blockedSenderStore.synchronize()
with a direct await in both surrounding synchronization blocks and in
reloadProfileScopedStoresIfNeeded. Preserve the existing ordering, actor
isolation, and cancellation behavior of the enclosing tasks.
- Around line 1647-1653: Remove the blockedAddressesProvider override from the
BlockedSenderEnforcementService construction in AccountView, allowing its
default profileResolver and syncServiceFactory resolution path to run per
connection. Add a focused test covering an active-profile switch and verify
enforcement uses the newly selected profile’s blocked addresses.
- Around line 832-840: Move the blockedSenderEnforcer.enforce call to after the
existing isSessionCurrent(session) and knownConnections[connection.id] guard in
synchronizeInbox, then add or retain a second equivalent guard after enforce
returns because enforcement suspends. Ensure provider writes and receipts occur
only while the session and connection remain valid.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Gmail/GmailPushRelayService.swift`:
- Around line 1704-1708: Update the syncRecentInbox notification flow around
BlockedSenderSyncService.enforce to retain the IDs removed from newMessageIds,
pass those suppressed IDs into GmailPushRelayService, and exclude them from
notificationCandidateIds even when durable eligibility exists.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`:
- Around line 144-151: Split the combined blocked-sender cleanup in the
clearOperations closure so UserDefaultsBlockedSenderStateStore().clear and
UserDefaultsBlockedSenderReceiptStore().clear each run in separate operations,
ensuring a thrown state-store error cannot prevent receipt cleanup and
preserving the one-store-per-operation convention.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductSync/BlockedSenderSyncService.swift`:
- Around line 420-444: Refactor the receipt handling around contains and insert
to use a Set for deduplication and membership checks, avoiding repeated linear
scans through the stored array. In insert, deduplicate the incoming messageIds
against existing receipts once, preserve the existing newest-first/eviction
behavior for distinct IDs, and continue enforcing maximumReceiptCount before
persisting. Keep contains behavior unchanged while using efficient set
membership.
- Around line 299-331: Update BlockedSenderSyncService’s retire() and
synchronize() using a retirement generation, matching the existing
InboxPreferenceStore and FeatureSuggestionPreferenceStore pattern: increment the
generation on retirement, capture it when synchronization starts, and discard
results and persistence if the store was retired while awaiting. Do not clear
isSynchronizing in retire(); preserve the in-flight guard until synchronize()
exits, while still handling cancellation and errors safely. Add a focused test
covering retirement during a suspended BlockedSenderSyncing call and asserting
the retired store does not overwrite its state after resolution.
- Around line 76-82: Refactor BlockedSenderStore’s blockedAddressSet to be a
cached value computed once from entries.filter(\.isBlocked).map(\.address),
without sorting; ensure blockedAddresses does not rebuild the set or remain on
the lookup path. Keep the cache excluded from Codable by preserving the custom
init(from:) and encoding only entries and schemaVersion, while ensuring
init(entries:) initializes the cached set.
- Around line 178-222: Replace UserDefaultsBlockedSenderStateStore and
UserDefaultsBlockedSenderReceiptStore persistence with Keychain-backed stores,
storing decrypted sender addresses, provider mailboxes, and message identifiers
under namespaced keys. Configure explicit Keychain accessibility that permits
background enforcement, and preserve the existing clear(productAccountId:)
cleanup behavior across all records for that account.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/BlockedSenderSyncServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 60-97: Extend BlockedSenderEnforcementService tests with three
cases: unauthorized connections and connections lacking .delete must suppress
matching new-message notifications without invoking or recording an action; a
perform failure must leave no receipt so a subsequent enforce call re-enqueues
the action. Reuse the existing test fixtures and assert both suppression results
and recorded action/receipt behavior.
- Around line 9-19: Add rejection-case assertions to
normalizesExactAddressesWithoutInferringAliases for control characters, embedded
whitespace, angle brackets, commas, semicolons, multiple @ symbols, and empty
local or domain parts, verifying NormalizedSenderAddress returns nil for each
malformed input.

In `@docs/adr/0051-enforce-profile-blocked-senders-on-trusted-devices.md`:
- Line 5: Update the ADR title to use the canonical term “profile-scoped Blocked
Senders” instead of “profile blocked senders,” preserving the rest of the title
unchanged.

In `@README.md`:
- Line 62: Update the Blocked Senders boundary description to state that the
Apple client performs sender matching, notification suppression, and local
durable Provider Mail Action queueing, while TypeScript/Convex only receives
opaque encrypted Product Sync data and never receives readable sender addresses
or provider execution requests. Preserve the existing behavior and scope
described in the paragraph.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj`, the `GMAIL_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID` and `GMAIL_PUBSUB_TOPIC` build settings are intentionally left empty in both Debug and Release configurations. These are deployment-specific values with no authoritative repo-wide value; release builds are expected to inject them via target build settings, as documented in the README. Do not flag these as missing/empty values needing to be populated.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`, failures from `devicePushUnregistrationService.unregister(session:)` (called from `unregisterDeviceIfProductAccountChanged` and `signOut`) are intentionally swallowed with `try?`. This is deliberate: propagating the error would conflict with the account-switch requirement that a new sign-in must succeed even when the old Apple identity token has expired, and there is currently no retry/cleanup path to trigger. A durable retry design that does not retain/revive obsolete credentials would be needed before propagating this failure.

Update lastChangedAtMilliseconds after synchronize() merges remote mutations.

synchronize() assigns senders = synchronized.applying(remaining) but never updates lastChangedAtMilliseconds from the merged result. Only init and append(address:isBlocked:) update it.

If a remote device's clock runs ahead, its mutation can carry a timestamp higher than this device's own nowMilliseconds(). After synchronize() pulls that mutation in, a subsequent local block() or unblock() call computes changedAtMilliseconds = max(nowMilliseconds(), lastChangedAtMilliseconds + 1), which can still be lower than the already-known remote timestamp. The local mutation then loses the convergence tie-break on the next sync, and the user's action is silently reverted without any error.

Update lastChangedAtMilliseconds from the merged entries so every later local mutation is ordered after every mutation this device has already observed, matching the "monotonic ordering" guarantee this change is meant to establish.

Add a focused test that synchronizes in a remote mutation with a future-dated timestamp, then calls block()/unblock() locally, and asserts the local mutation's timestamp exceeds the remote one.

reversals of prior ADRs without an explicit supersession note. For
docs/agents/ and bootstrap docs, verify agent workflow, validation, and
triage guidance stay aligned with AGENTS.md. Flag broken cross-links,
speculative future claims presented as shipped behavior, and docs that
omit the Apple vs TypeScript ownership of a boundary they describe.

The Apple app must provide formatter, linter, and test commands. Run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh for format and lint, and use the documented xcodebuild test command for tests; SwiftLint runs in strict mode.

apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift: Prioritize functional correctness, data protection, and Apple platform
behavior over style already enforced by swift-format and SwiftLint.
Check actor isolation, cancellation, lifecycle transitions, persistence,
retry and offline behavior, and Keychain accessibility. Flag credentials,
tokens, mail content, or decrypted Product Sync data that can be logged,
persisted outside approved device-local storage, or cross a documented
privacy boundary. Require focused tests for changed behavior and failure
paths.

Run the required Apple validation commands.

I could not run Apple tooling in this review environment. Run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh and the documented xcodebuild test command before merge. Confirm that SwiftLint runs in strict mode.

As per coding guidelines, Apple validation must use SwiftLint strict mode and Swift Format strict linting. As per path instructions, run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh for format and lint and the documented xcodebuild test command for tests; SwiftLint runs in strict mode.

P2 Badge Refresh provider-action status before showing controls

When a blocked-sender enforcement delete becomes failed or user-action-required after the last mailActionViewModel.resume call, these sets can still be stale when the user opens Blocked Senders. The settings view only runs store.synchronize() on appear, so it never re-queries blockedPendingActionConnectionIds / failedPendingActionConnectionIds; in that scenario the connection is shown as “Ready” with no Retry/Acknowledge button even though this is the surface meant to recover provider enforcement failures.
