Summary

  • add Profile-scoped, end-to-end encrypted Muted Thread records keyed by Mailbox Connection and Stable Thread Identity
  • preserve offline edits, deterministic concurrent resolution, and fail-closed rethreading repair
  • expose Mute/Unmute in thread actions and Inbox Settings without changing provider mail or unread visibility
  • suppress proactive reader suggestions and recheck authoritative mute state throughout Gmail push delivery

Closes #399

Validation

Passed:

  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh
  • plutil -lint apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj
  • focused Catalyst tests for ThreadMuteSyncService, provider-action isolation, Settings accessibility, mixed versions, and Gmail notification races
  • Catalyst build-for-testing
  • iOS Simulator Debug build-for-testing on iPhone 17 UDID D6D43A14-3B1A-41B6-B25A-0DFCA1BFB089
  • pnpm lint
  • pnpm format
  • pnpm turbo run check-types
  • pnpm test
  • pnpm fallow

Incomplete:

  • broad serial iOS Debug test-without-building was stopped after 359.547 seconds because Xcode remained blocked waiting for XCTest workers to materialize and a crashed test operation to finish. No test assertion failure and no Simulator Busy error were reported.
  • the separate mixed-connection, Release performance, and Core Mail Loop gates were not run after that XCTest infrastructure stall; CI should run the affected Apple gate matrix.

Human actions

None beyond normal review and CI.

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 5 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Added Profile-scoped, end-to-end encrypted Muted Thread records keyed by Mailbox Connection and Stable Thread Identity.
  • Added offline edits, encrypted Product Sync, deterministic conflict resolution, fail-closed rethreading repair, and profile-scoped Settings inspection.
  • Muted Threads remain visible and retain normal unread behavior. They do not change provider mail or provider read, archive, move, or mute state.
  • Suppressed Gmail push notifications and proactive Calendar, Unsubscribe, and contact suggestions while a thread is muted.
  • Added mute and unmute controls to thread actions and Inbox Settings. New replies do not unmute threads.
  • Cleared local mute state during product-account cleanup.

Privacy and security

  • Mute records use encrypted Product Sync payloads.
  • Records use stable identity digests and trusted device identity for deterministic conflict resolution.
  • The service validates payload versions and integrity, resolves redirects, and fails closed during rethreading repair.
  • Notification delivery rechecks authoritative mute state after authorization races.
  • Profile and mailbox-connection scoping prevents mute state from crossing account boundaries.

Affected areas

  • Apple: SwiftUI account, conversation, thread-list, and Inbox Settings views; Product Sync; Gmail push delivery; account-session cleanup; unit tests; and Xcode project configuration.
  • TypeScript: No TypeScript areas changed.

Release and configuration

  • Added a patch changeset for unwired-mail.
  • Added an ADR for synchronized muted-thread product state.
  • No provider migration or configuration change is required.

Validation

  • Linting, formatting, type checks, tests, builds, and focused Catalyst coverage passed.
  • Broad serial iOS testing stopped because of an XCTest infrastructure stall.
  • Mixed-connection, Release performance, and Core Mail Loop gates remain for CI.

Walkthrough

Adds profile-scoped muted threads with encrypted Product Sync, offline persistence, rethreading reconciliation, Inbox Settings inspection, thread actions, suggestion suppression, and authoritative Gmail notification filtering.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to c9f1b

This PR adds synchronized muted-thread state, but rethreading can currently turn a user-muted thread back on and resume its notifications; account cleanup can also leave mute state behind, with related concurrency and synchronization costs still requiring owner attention. Merge should be blocked until the rethreading correctness issue is fixed.

P1 Badge Encrypt persisted pending mute mutations

ThreadMuteLocalState includes provider account, thread, and message identifiers, but this writes its JSON representation directly to UserDefaults. That leaves offline pending mutations in plaintext, contradicting the encryption requirement in docs/adr/0051-synchronize-muted-threads-as-product-state.md:5; persist the pending state through an encrypted/keychain-backed store instead.

P1 Badge Serialize local mute-state mutations

When users mute different threads concurrently, each call performs an unsynchronized read-modify-write around an awaited remote write. If call A loads first, call B adds its pending mutation while A is awaiting, B's upload then fails, and A succeeds, A's final save at lines 332-335 uses its stale copy and deletes B's durable pending mutation, so the offline action is permanently lost. Serialize these transactions or reload and merge the latest state before every completion save.

P2 Badge Preserve target tombstones when resolving redirects

If rethread reconciliation writes the target mute and redirect but the subsequent old-identity tombstone fails, this snapshot maps the still-muted old record onto the target while ignoring the target's later unmuted record. Subsequent reconciliation sees the resolved target already matching current metadata and never repairs the old record, so even explicitly unmuting the target leaves the thread muted indefinitely. Resolve all records to their targets and choose the newest payload, including isMuted == false, before constructing the snapshot.

P1 Badge Stub mute synchronization in existing wakeup tests

Existing notification tests such as testGmailWakeupShowsNotificationForNewMessageMatchingEncryptedRules construct this handler without threadMuteSync; once a candidate exists, the new default service lists records through the real ConvexProductSyncRecordTransport instead of the test's recording dependencies. Those previously hermetic tests will now attempt the live backend and throw before their delivery assertions, so inject an unmuted stub in the existing wakeup-test setup.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

- Around line 8452-8483: Update AccountViewModel’s apply path for
ThreadMuteSnapshot so applying a loaded or reconciled snapshot preserves the
existing muted state for thread IDs in updatingThreadIds, matching

followed by a load of a stale snapshot, and verify the optimistic mute state

- Around line 1934-1944: Refactor the Gmail push handling flow to load
authoritative muted thread identities once per profile, key the result by
StableThreadIdentity, and reuse that lookup in the candidate filter and
eligibility guard instead of calling threadMuteSync.isMutedAuthoritatively per
message. Retain only the final pre-delivery isMutedAuthoritatively check as the
authoritative race confirmation, including the path around the referenced
delivery logic.
- Around line 1770-1791: Make the mute-lookup loop in the notification handling
flow resilient to Product Sync failures by applying the established fail-closed
policy and routing the batch through completeWithGenericFallback, so new-mail
awareness is preserved without delivering potentially muted notifications. Add a

ThreadMuteLocalStatePersisting, and UserDefaultsThreadMuteLocalStateStore—into a
new ThreadMuteRecords.swift file, leaving the service in its own file so
SwiftLint length checks remain enabled.
- Around line 210-259: Serialize the full local-state read-modify-write flow
shared by load and setMuted, including network awaits and final saves, by
converting ThreadMuteSyncService to an actor or routing both methods through one
serial executor. Ensure concurrent callers cannot overwrite each other’s pending
or cached records, while preserving existing cancellation, retry, and offline
snapshot behavior.
- Around line 266-279: In isMutedAuthoritatively, resolve the thread identity
with loadRedirects and resolveRedirect before looking up profilePending, then
build and use the resolved payloadIdentifier for the pending check. Preserve the
existing fallback behavior for cases without a pending record.
- Around line 336-344: Update mapBoundaryError and the setMuted error handling
so transient boundary failures such as retryLimitExceeded and
incompletePagination retain the pending mutation for a later load/retry, while
genuinely invalid payloads still remove and persist deletion of the pending
record. Preserve cancellation propagation and existing handling for other
errors.
- Around line 347-393: Update reconcile(with:profileId:session:) to load
redirects once before iterating, reuse them for each repair, and defer reloading
the snapshot until after the loop. Accumulate or apply the repair operations
without calling load inside each iteration, while preserving the existing mute
and redirect updates.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/GmailPushRelayServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 1380-1382: Update the GmailPushWakeupHandler tests to avoid
asserting exact mute lookup counts; verify observable outcomes such as no
notification delivery and the watermark result, using only a lower-bound check
when validating rechecks. Rename
testGmailWakeupRechecksMuteAfterAuthorizationRace to describe the fixed-sequence
behavior modeled by SequenceThreadMuteSync rather than an authorization race.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/PinSyncServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 243-246: Replace the production ThreadMuteSyncService() with the
existing RecordingThreadMuteSyncService test double in both muteViewModel
fixtures, preserving the current session configuration and ensuring
deterministic test isolation without real transport or shared UserDefaults
state.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/ThreadMuteSyncServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 120-157: Add focused tests for isMutedAuthoritatively covering a
former identity redirected to a resolved identity with a pending offline mute,
unavailable Product Sync fail-closed behavior, and no existing mute record
returning false. Reuse the redirect setup from
testRethreadingMovesMuteAndOldIdentityCanUnmuteResolvedThread where practical,
and assert the authoritative notification-gating outcomes for each case.
- Around line 159-171: Update
testSettingsItemKeepsMuteInspectableAndUnmuteAccessible by removing the
assertions for item.id, item.source, and item.subject, while retaining the
unmuteAccessibilityLabel assertion and keeping the test in its current location.

In `@docs/adr/0051-synchronize-muted-threads-as-product-state.md`:
- Around line 3-7: Update the ADR’s privacy boundary section to state that
Convex receives only an opaque encrypted payload and opaque identifier digest;
provider thread identifiers, subjects, and anchor message identifiers never
reach the backend in plaintext. Also document that durable additive redirects
accumulate when a Thread is repeatedly rethreaded, and clearly record whether
this growth is accepted or a cleanup path is planned.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`, failures from `devicePushUnregistrationService.unregister(session:)` (called from `unregisterDeviceIfProductAccountChanged` and `signOut`) are intentionally swallowed with `try?`. This is deliberate: propagating the error would conflict with the account-switch requirement that a new sign-in must succeed even when the old Apple identity token has expired, and there is currently no retry/cleanup path to trigger. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the muted-thread subject fallback. The "Muted Thread" branch is unreachable.

threadsById only contains threads from the current navigation snapshot. A muted thread that is not in that snapshot resolves thread to nil. Then thread?.latestMessage.subject.isEmpty == false is false, so the item shows "(No subject)". The "Muted Thread" fallback never executes. Users cannot distinguish a muted thread with an empty subject from a muted thread that is not loaded locally.

Separate the two cases explicitly.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

A concurrent load or reconcile discards an in-flight optimistic mute change.

setMuted increments stateRevision only after service.setMuted succeeds. Consider this order:

  1. load() captures revision and suspends in service.load.
  2. The user toggles mute. setMuted applies the optimistic local state, inserts the thread into updatingThreadIds, and suspends in service.setMuted.
  3. load() resumes. stateRevision is unchanged, so the guard passes and apply(loaded) replaces mutedThreadIds with the server snapshot that does not contain the new mute.
  4. service.setMuted succeeds. setMuted only increments stateRevision and never reapplies the local state.

The row then shows the thread as unmuted while the synchronized record says muted, until the next successful load. PinViewModel.applyLoadedThreadIds already protects against this by preserving threads in updatingThreadIds. Apply the same protection here.

🛡️ Proposed fix to preserve in-flight mutations
   private func apply(_ snapshot: ThreadMuteSnapshot) {
-    self.snapshot = snapshot
-    mutedThreadIds = snapshot.mutedThreadIds
+    guard !updatingThreadIds.isEmpty else {
+      self.snapshot = snapshot
+      mutedThreadIds = snapshot.mutedThreadIds
+      return
+    }
+    var mutes = snapshot.mutes.filter { !updatingThreadIds.contains($0.key) }
+    for threadId in updatingThreadIds {
+      if let inFlight = self.snapshot.mutes[threadId] {
+        mutes[threadId] = inFlight
+      }
+    }
+    self.snapshot = ThreadMuteSnapshot(mutes: mutes)
+    mutedThreadIds = self.snapshot.mutedThreadIds
   }

Add a focused test that starts a slow setMuted and completes a load that returns the stale snapshot. As per path instructions for apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift: "Require focused tests for changed behavior and failure paths."

Remove the blanket SwiftLint suppressions by splitting the file.

Line 4 disables file_length and type_body_length for the whole file. Line 187 then repeats a type_body_length suppression for the same type, which is redundant.

The payload and storage types are independent of the service. Moving ThreadMuteSyncPayload, ThreadMuteRedirectPayload, ThreadMuteLocalState, ThreadMuteLocalStatePersisting, and UserDefaultsThreadMuteLocalStateStore into a ThreadMuteRecords.swift file brings both files under the limits. The suppressions then become unnecessary, and SwiftLint strict mode keeps enforcing the limits on future edits.

Use the test double instead of the production ThreadMuteSyncService in these fixtures.

ThreadMuteSyncService() uses the default UserDefaultsThreadMuteLocalStateStore and the default ProductSyncRecordBoundary. These fixtures only exercise the pin and attachment paths today, so no mute call happens. If a future change reads mute state during reader construction or rendering, these tests gain shared UserDefaults state and a real transport dependency. Add tests for isMutedAuthoritatively.

The suite covers load, setMuted, and reconcile. It never calls isMutedAuthoritatively. ADR 0051 makes that method the authoritative gate for notification delivery, and the Gmail push layer in this stack depends on it.

Three behaviors need coverage, and two of them are failure paths:

  1. A redirect exists and a pending offline mute was stored under the resolved identity. Query the former identity. This case currently returns false, which is the defect raised on ThreadMuteSyncService.swift Lines 266-279. A test here would have caught it.
  2. The Product Sync boundary is unavailable. Assert the documented fail-closed outcome so the push path cannot silently deliver a notification for a muted Thread.
  3. No record exists for the Thread. Assert false.

The existing rethreading test at Lines 121-157 already builds the redirect fixture, so case 1 needs little new setup.

As per path instructions for apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift: "Require focused tests for changed behavior and failure paths."

Muted Threads are Profile-scoped Product Sync records keyed by Mailbox Connection and Stable Thread Identity. Their encrypted payload retains one stable provider-message anchor so a device can repair the mute when provider or RFC rethreading changes the current Thread identity. A durable redirect makes writes through an older identity converge on the repaired identity.

Mute and Unmute update local state immediately and retain an encrypted pending mutation while offline. Concurrent changes resolve by logical timestamp and Trusted Device identity. New replies do not change the record. Settings exposes the current Profile's records so every mute remains inspectable and reversible.

Muting is deliberately outside Provider Mail Actions. It does not hide a Thread, alter unread state, or mutate provider labels, folders, flags, or notification settings. Notification delivery checks authoritative Product Sync state before claiming a notification receipt and again after notification authorization, closing the race where another device mutes a Thread during delivery preparation. The reader applies the same state to proactive Calendar and Unsubscribe suggestions.

State the privacy boundary and the consequences explicitly.

The ADR describes the decision clearly. It does not state the privacy boundary in the way the other ADRs referenced from README.md do. Add two facts:

  1. What crosses the device boundary. State that Convex receives only an opaque encrypted payload and an opaque identifier digest, and that provider thread identifiers, subjects, and anchor message identifiers never reach the backend in plaintext.
  2. The consequences of the redirect design. Redirect records are durable and additive, so a Thread that is rethreaded repeatedly accumulates records. Record whether the design accepts that growth or plans a cleanup path.

As per path instructions for **/*.md: "For ADR changes, require a clear decision, consequences, and privacy or security boundary impact".

Inject UnmutedThreadMuteSync() into the remaining handler constructions.

These four GmailPushWakeupHandler constructions omit threadMuteSync, so they use the ThreadMuteSyncService() default from GmailPushRelayService.swift Line 1470. That default reads the Keychain and the Product Sync record boundary from a unit test.

Each of these tests returns from handle before the mute loop today, so no lookup happens:

  • Lines 2161-2178 and 2238-2253 return at the hasProcessingTimeRemaining guard (Line 1675).
  • Lines 2364-2378 return at the notificationRules != nil guard (Line 1790).
  • Lines 2529-2539 return at the currentNotificationRules guard (Line 1806).

The omission is therefore latent, not currently failing. If a later change moves the mute lookup earlier in handle, these tests will reach real device storage and stop being deterministic. Inject the existing double in all four constructions.

141-156: 🩺 Stability & Availability

No change needed for Unmute.

ThreadMuteViewModel.setMuted already rejects repeat updates with updatingThreadIds, and failed writes restore the mute state and set errorMessage. MailShellSidebar displays that error.

1825-1838: The mute lookup still has no offline policy, so a Product Sync outage stops all Gmail notifications.

This loop calls threadMuteSync.isMutedAuthoritatively with a plain try await. There is no failClosed wrapper and no catch. Every other remote dependency in handle goes through failClosed (Lines 1663, 1669, 1751, 1794, 1800).

isMutedAuthoritativelyUnlocked throws on any boundary failure for a thread without a pending record. It calls loadRedirects and then reads the remote record, and it consults no cached state (ThreadMuteSyncService.swift Lines 166-188). A transient Product Sync failure therefore throws out of handle. The watermark stays unadvanced and no notification is delivered, including notifications for threads that are not muted.

A previous review flagged this and the thread was marked as addressed, but the supplied code shows no guard. Confirm the current state and make the policy explicit.

As per path instructions for apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift: "Check actor isolation, cancellation, lifecycle transitions, persistence, retry and offline behavior" and "Require focused tests for changed behavior and failure paths."

Run the following script to check whether any guard wraps the mute lookups:

#!/bin/bash
# Description: Check the error-handling context around every isMutedAuthoritatively call site.
set -euo pipefail

fd -t f 'GmailPushRelayService.swift' --exec rg -n -B 12 -A 6 'isMutedAuthoritatively' {}

# Compare against the established fail-closed helper usage in the same file.
fd -t f 'GmailPushRelayService.swift' --exec rg -n -C 4 'failClosed' {}

# Check whether a mute-lookup failure path is covered by a focused test.
fd -t f 'GmailPushRelayServiceTests.swift' --exec rg -n -C 6 'ThreadMuteSync|isMutedAuthoritatively' {}

1987-1997: 🚀 Performance & Scalability

The handler still performs three authoritative mute lookups per message.

isMutedAuthoritatively is called from the candidate filter (Line 1831), this eligibility guard (Line 1992), and the pre-delivery recheck (Line 2041). Each call performs a redirect listing plus a record read, and each one now also acquires the per-product-account operation lock in ThreadMuteSyncService.withOperationLock. For k candidate messages that is about 3k serialized remote round trips inside a background push window that hasProcessingTimeRemaining already bounds.

The new test asserts checkCount() >= 2 for a single message, which confirms repeated lookups.

A previous review flagged this and the thread was marked as addressed. Load the muted thread identities once per profile, key them by StableThreadIdentity, and keep only the final pre-delivery recheck as the authoritative confirmation.

52-52: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration

Keep the invalidPayload mapping. A nil input produces .write(proposed), while conflicts retry and successful updates return a record.
