📝 WalkthroughSummary
Validation
WalkthroughThread Snooze is synchronized through Profile-scoped Product Sync. The Apple app adds a permanent Snoozed mailbox, local mailbox projections, snooze controls, return-to-attention notifications, and test support. ChangesThread Snooze
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Mergeability Score: 🟠 High · up to This PR adds synchronized thread snooze, mailbox projection, and reminder behavior, but the current implementation still has merge-blocking correctness and privacy risks: a migration failure can permanently hide a snoozed thread, locked profiles may receive subject-revealing reminders, and reminder taps may not return to the correct thread. Additional stale-state, retained-mail-content, and test-reliability issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

1-8: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winDocument the Apple and TypeScript/Convex ownership boundary.
State that the Apple client evaluates due times, applies the mailbox projection, and enforces interruption policy. State that TypeScript/Convex stores only opaque ciphertext for snooze records and does not evaluate snooze logic. Keep the prose format; ADRs in this repository use both prose and named sections.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Features/Account/AccountView.swift`:
- Around line 7296-7318: The apply(_:) method should preserve each existing
wakeTasks entry when its task’s scheduled dueAtMilliseconds still matches the
current snooze. Track or otherwise associate each task with its captured due
instant, skip cancellation and recreation for unchanged snoozes, and only
replace the task when the due instant changes; retain existing cleanup for
removed or inactive threads.
- Around line 7140-7165: Update the .laterToday branch in dueDate so adding
three hours cannot produce a due date on the next local calendar day; clamp it
to the current day’s end or use the existing tomorrow-morning resolution when
the addition crosses midnight, while preserving the current three-hour result
when it remains today.
- Around line 5119-5141: Update ThreadSnoozeSettingsPanel to display
viewModel.errorMessage beneath the toggle when present, and track the async
update state so the “Return to Attention” Toggle is disabled while
setReturnToAttentionEnabled is in flight. Preserve the existing binding behavior
and ensure the in-flight state is cleared after both success and failure.
- Around line 9670-9697: Update reprojectProductMailboxesIfNeeded() so inbox
reprojection processes only connection IDs present in
navigationSnapshot.messagesByConnection and preserves existing threads belonging
to omitted connections when navigation loading failed. Keep the current
filtering and grouping behavior for snapshot-present connections, while
retaining already-loaded inbox threads for connections absent from the snapshot.
In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/MailboxConnection.swift`:
- Around line 621-630: Require explicit snooze state throughout mailbox
membership APIs so omitted values cannot misclassify snoozed threads as Inbox
threads. In
apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/MailboxConnection.swift:621-630,
remove the default from MailboxMessageCollection.contains(isSnoozed:) and remove
the snoozedThreadIds default on projected near 1127-1128. In
apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Features/Account/AccountView.swift:2704-2745,
remove snoozedThreadIds defaults from MailShellProductMailboxState.init,
MailboxNavigationSnapshot.init, selectedMailboxMessages, and bulkActionBatches.
In AccountView.swift:4557-4558, make snoozeViewModel non-optional in
MailShellThreadList and MailShellConversationReader and use direct
snoozedThreadIds membership lookups.

In

- Around line 494-508: Update validate(_:identifier:profileId:) to require both
payload.anchorProviderMessageId and payload.changedByTrustedDeviceId to be
non-empty, alongside the existing payload checks, while preserving the current
invalidPayload failure behavior.
- Around line 313-338: Refactor reconcile to track whether any snooze was
canceled and build the returned ThreadSnoozeSnapshot from the initially loaded
snapshot after applying those cancellations in memory. Avoid the final load when
no cancellation occurred, while preserving the existing cancel behavior and
returned state for affected snoozes.
- Around line 399-439: Implement causal tombstone compaction for the
cancel/reconcile flow around cancel and ProductSyncRecordTransport, rather than
pruning records solely by dueAtMilliseconds. Add a safe device-convergence
boundary that prevents delayed offline snooze uploads from resurrecting canceled
threads, and compact only records older than that boundary while preserving
required conflict ordering. Add reconciliation tests covering stale-device
uploads and tombstone cleanup; if the transport cannot support a safe protocol,
document the reason unbounded retention is required.
In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/ThreadSnoozeSyncServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 43-77: Add focused tests in ThreadSnoozeSyncServiceTests for stale
concurrent edits that exercise the concurrentModification branches in snooze and
setReturnToAttentionEnabled. Create a newer authoritative record, submit an
older changedAtMilliseconds from another device, and assert
ThreadSnoozeSyncError.concurrentModification plus its user-facing error text.
- Around line 272-292: Replace the real-time sleeps in
testOfflineRestartLoadsSnoozeAndRescheduledTimerDoesNotResurfaceEarly with
deterministic clock control. Inject a clock or due-time provider through
ThreadSnoozeViewModel into apply, ensuring it uses the injected time rather than
Date.now and supports advancing time without Task.sleep; update the test to
advance the clock before each assertion while preserving the expected snooze
ordering.
In `@docs/adr/0050-keep-thread-snooze-out-of-provider-state.md`:
- Line 7: Update the line 7 terminology to use “Return-to-Attention,” matching
the spelling in line 3 and CONTEXT.md; do not alter the surrounding policy
description.
In `@README.md`:
- Line 66: Update the README product description to present the Snoozed mailbox
and snooze state as shipped product behavior: change the Unified Mailboxes
statement and related Snooze synchronization, visibility, and local-presentation
claims to present tense. Retain future tense only for genuinely planned
features, and ensure the paragraph consistently reflects current product truth.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/MicrosoftGraphMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, queued Microsoft Graph pending actions contain exactly one provider message. Microsoft Graph move requests use `Prefer: IdType="ImmutableId"`, so retrying the action does not have a multi-message replay window or moved-message-ID instability.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

Learning: For Gmail mailbox cleanup, `packages/convex/convex/pushRelay.ts` implements `pushRelay:removeGmailConnection` as an idempotent mutation: an absent operational Gmail connection returns successfully with `removed: false` and independently computed `hasRemainingGmailConnections`. `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Convex/ConvexClient.swift` intentionally exposes only `hasRemainingGmailConnections` through `ConvexClient.removeGmailConnection`; do not require tests for a duplicate-removal error path.

Learning: For the Trusted Device revocation flow documented in `docs/adr/0020-revoke-devices-with-sync-key-rotation.md`, a reconnecting revoked app receives only a rejection/tombstone purge instruction. Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`, failures from `devicePushUnregistrationService.unregister(session:)` (called from `unregisterDeviceIfProductAccountChanged` and `signOut`) are intentionally swallowed with `try?`. This is deliberate: propagating the error would conflict with the account-switch requirement that a new sign-in must succeed even when the old Apple identity token has expired, and there is currently no retry/cleanup path to trigger. A durable retry design that does not retain/revive obsolete credentials would be needed before propagating this failure.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/GmailMessageMetadataServiceTests.swift`, `testMailboxFreshnessKeepsCoalescedSyncRunningWhenFirstCallerIsCancelled` must release the deliberately suspended shared sync before awaiting the cancelled caller’s `first.value`. Learning: In the EWS mail provider, keep the failure-disposition/classification logic intentionally different between `OutboxDeliveryService` and `PendingProviderActionService`.
- `OutboxDeliveryService` should treat uncertain sends as “ambiguous” (classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid/failed EWS responses as ambiguous) and reconcile before allowing another send to prevent duplicates.
- `PendingProviderActionService` should treat its retry-safe EWS response cases as transient so they trigger provider actions as retries.
During review, do not refactor these into a shared helper solely because the response-code checks overlap—only extract if you can prove the semantics (ambiguous-before-retry vs retry-safe transient) remain unchanged for each service.

Learning: For the Trusted Device revocation flow documented in `docs/adr/0020-revoke-devices-with-sync-key-rotation.md`, a reconnecting revoked app receives only a rejection/tombstone purge instruction. It must purge local product data and mailbox credentials before attempting provider access or Product Sync; the response must not grant Product Account API access or expose account data.

Keep multi-hit search threads unsnoozable until hydrated
When a provider full-text search returns multiple hits from the same thread outside the loaded mailbox, selecting the second hit merges it into selectedThread.messages but replaces retainedSearchResultThread with only that latest one-message hit, so this equality becomes false and partialSearchResultThreadId returns nil. Fresh evidence is that the multi-hit path in selectSearchResult can still represent only the search hits, not the full locally observed thread, so the Snooze menu is re-enabled and persists an incomplete observed-message set; a later all-observed reconcile can then treat an already-existing non-hit message at or after the anchor as new mail and immediately cancel the snooze.

Keep loaded search hits snoozable
When a search result belongs to a thread that is already fully loaded, this assignment retains the hydrated thread rather than the search-hit subset. partialSearchResultThreadId then sees the selected and retained message sets as equal, treats the full thread as a partial search result, and disables the Snooze/Change Snooze menus even though all locally observed messages are available. Retain only the search-hit subset, or clear the retained marker when the existing thread was already hydrated.

Preserve newer source snoozes during migration
When another trusted device reschedules the source Thread after this reconcile loaded it but before migration cleanup, this call only checks the anchor; if the anchor is unchanged, cancel advances the clock and tombstones that newer source record after the stale migrated payload has already been written to the target. That loses the newer due time/notification owner and makes Product Sync converge to the old snooze, so the migration cleanup should also verify the expected change version or re-read and migrate the current source before tombstoning it.

Cache active snoozes for offline restart
With the new snooze record family using the default uncached ProductSyncRecordBoundary and .authoritative reads, an app restart while offline cannot load previously synchronized active snoozes; ThreadSnoozeViewModel.load() then leaves snoozedThreadIds empty, so those threads reappear in Inbox and no due wake tasks are restored until the network succeeds. This contradicts the feature ADR's offline-restart contract in docs/adr/0050-keep-thread-snooze-out-of-provider-state.md:5; wire this family through a ciphertext cache/fallback like the connection/notification sync paths.

Reapply snooze projection after categorization
When there are no pending provider actions, Mailbox Tools categorization returns this projection and GmailInboxViewModel.categorizeHistorical assigns it directly to threads; because the new call hard-codes snoozedThreadIds: [], any active snoozed thread that still has provider INBOX state is published back into the visible Inbox after running “Categorize Selected Old Emails” until a later reload or snooze-state change reprojects it. Pass the current snooze set through this projection or reproject the categorization result before assigning it.

Apply cached snoozes even when preferences are offline
When the app restarts offline after active snoozes have been cached, this loadPreferences is awaited in the same tuple before applying the snooze snapshot, so any preference transport failure skips apply(snapshot) and leaves snoozedThreadIds empty with no wake tasks. Fresh evidence is that the snooze record family now has ciphertext fallback, but the preference family remains authoritative/uncached, so decouple preference failure from applying cached snoozes or give preferences a safe cached/default fallback.

Reconcile snoozes after loading synced state
When this reloads Product Sync after the local mailbox snapshot already contains messages—for example, another trusted device created a snooze while this device had already synced a later message in that thread—it only applies the active snooze set and updates projection. The only reconcileSnoozes call is tied to messagesByConnection changes, so if metadata does not change again the locally observed new arrival never cancels the snooze and the thread is hidden until a later refresh; reconcile against the current inboxViewModel.navigationSnapshot.messagesByConnection after loading snoozes.

Clear the Snooze ciphertext cache on sign-out
When a user signs out, KeychainProductSyncCacheClearer.clear (Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift:130) enumerates the Product Sync caches to delete, but this new Keychain service is not in that list and the cache type exposes no clear hook. Because savePayloads stores the Thread Snooze family under productAccountId, encrypted snooze state remains on disk after sign-out and can be reused as the offline fallback if that account is restored, so add this cache to the product-account cleanup path.

Preserve full threads in unified Inbox projection
When loading Unified Inbox, this branch now includes .role(.inbox) and filters individual messages before regrouping. A thread with one Inbox message and a sent/archived reply has those non-Inbox messages in each per-connection result, but this second projection removes them from the unified row, so the conversation reader/provider actions lose part of the thread and snoozing from Unified Inbox can persist an incomplete observed-message set. Preserve all messages for thread IDs with at least one visible Inbox message, matching MailboxMetadataSyncResult.projected.

Preserve full threads when reprojecting Inbox
When a Snooze/Pin/outbox state change reprojects the currently selected Inbox, this rebuilds threads from only the messages that individually satisfy Inbox. Conversations normally keep the full observed thread once any message is visible, so a mixed Inbox/Sent thread loses its sent or archived messages after a Snooze state update; a later Snooze change from that truncated row can then store an incomplete observed-message set. Reproject by visible thread IDs instead of grouping the filtered messages.

Preserve pins after historical categorization
When Mailbox Tools is run from a connection-scoped Pins mailbox, currentCollection is .pins, but this projection omits navigationSnapshot.pinnedThreadIds. MailboxMetadataSyncResult.projected defaults that set to empty, so the .pins projection treats every message as unpinned and replaces the visible list with no threads after categorization until another reload/reprojection; pass the current pinned set alongside the snoozed set.

Preserve newer snooze cache entries during refresh
When an authoritative load()/reconcile() list that started before a new snooze finishes after that snooze's save, this line removes every cached snooze for the profile and then writes the older replacement list. Because Product Sync only locks individual record identifiers, that stale family refresh can evict the newly cached active snooze, so an immediate offline restart falls back to a cache that is missing it; serialize family refreshes with per-record saves or retain newer existing payloads.

Prevent stale loads from overriding reconciliation
If a load() is already in flight when reconcile(with:) observes a new message and cancels a snooze, both operations keep the same stateRevision because reconciliation only snapshots it here. The older load can then return after the cancel, pass the same revision guard in load(), and reapply the pre-cancel snooze so the thread stays hidden until another reconcile; give reconciliations their own generation or otherwise invalidate older loads before applying.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.
