Summary

  • move the Mail View tab bar to the full app shell, center the views, and keep New Message on the right
  • refine the conversation reader with the native glass toolbar, expanded messages, transparent bodies, distinct sent-message headers, unread styling, and subtler selection
  • hide duplicate quoted history and known preheader text while preserving cached message presentation
  • remove Synchronization settings sections and present Development Settings as a blocking, close-only modal
  • omit Spam and Trash counts and update the resolved product behavior documentation

Why

The previous Catalyst presentation scoped the tab bar to the thread column, split the reader title from its actions, and retained message chrome and quoted content that duplicated the visible conversation. The settings presentation also behaved like a separate window instead of a focused modal.

This aligns the wide mail shell and real-message rendering with the latest design review while preserving native Apple navigation and accessibility behavior.

Validation

  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh — 0 violations across 127 files
  • focused iOS simulator regression run — 64 tests passed
  • Catalyst xcodebuild build
  • live Catalyst verification of the app-wide tab bar, conversation rendering, quote removal, cached presentation, and blocking settings modal
  • final layout detector — no findings
  • git diff --check

The full broad iOS test suite was not run. Xcode continues to emit the pre-existing Swift 6 isolation warning in ProductAccountSession.

Note

Medium Risk
Large UI refactor in AccountView plus new HTML/plain-text quote-removal heuristics that could mis-strip edge-case content; mark-read and body-loading behavior changed materially.

Overview
Refines the mail shell and conversation reader to match updated product behavior: threads show every message expanded (newest first), with reply/category tooling anchored on the newest message while thread-level actions still apply to the whole thread.

Shell & navigation: The Mail View tab bar moves to a full-width bottom inset on the split view (sync overlay + centered category tabs with icons/badges + compose on the right), with glass styling on newer OS versions. Sidebar loses compose/refresh duplication and Spam/Trash sidebar counts; Development Settings on Catalyst becomes a sheet instead of a separate window.

Conversation reader: Removes per-message expand/collapse; messages render as dark cards with headers/bodies split. A top reader bar (glass/safeAreaBar where available) holds subject + toolbar actions; compact width folds extra actions into More. HTML bodies use transparent backgrounds; quoted reply history and email preheaders are stripped in sanitization for non-oldest messages in a thread (forwards preserved). Cached body text, delayed loading UI, inline retry, viewport-based mark-as-read batching, and search-result scroll targets are added or tightened.

Settings: Advanced drops Synchronization Health UI/search entries; settings scenes show a close control and block dismiss when appropriate.

CONTEXT.md documents the expanded-thread reader model.

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 16 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

6475-6505: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

MailShellConversationMessageBody is now a pass-through.

After the expansion controls and the card container were removed, this view forwards eleven parameters to MailShellMessageBody and adds only padding. It re-derives connectionId and messageId from message, which is its sole remaining logic.

Consider using MailShellMessageBody directly at the call site (Line 5303) and applying the padding there. That removes one indirection and one parameter list to keep in sync.

6585-6598: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The 1-point placeholder destabilizes scroll position in long threads.

Before a body resolves, the view renders Color.clear.frame(height: 1) for the first 300 milliseconds, and again for the whole load when showsLoadingIndicator is false. Every message in the conversation now renders a body, so a thread collapses to near-zero-height rows that expand as loads complete.

The result is repeated content-height growth while the user scrolls, which moves already-visible messages.

Reserve an approximate height for the pending state, or keep the placeholder at the height of the loading indicator it replaces.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/PendingProviderActionServiceTests.swift`, `testCancellingRetryWaiterDoesNotWaitForStalledProviderWork` intentionally allows cancellation both before and after `PendingProviderActionService.waitUntilProcessingFinishes(key:)` registers its continuation. `PendingProviderActionService` supports both paths via the `waitForScheduledRetries(connection:session:)` cancellation loop guard and the cancellation-aware continuation registration/removal logic; do not require an entry synchronization for this test.

Replace the undeclared loading counter

loadMessageBodyText references undeclared loadingMessageBodyCount, which prevents compilation. Use loadingMessageBodyCounts[message.id] with matching increment and decrement logic so Forward and Reply preview loads update isLoadingMessageBody(message.id).

Remove the unreachable macCatalyst development-settings branch. On macCatalyst, AccountView.showsDevelopmentSettings is never set. Keep settingsRouter.open(route) in openSettings, but remove the local macCatalyst sheet and its no-op state handling. The app-level sheet already owns this route. It generates a fresh UUID for each request, and its signed-in host already handles unsaved changes.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/MicrosoftGraphMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, queued Microsoft Graph pending actions contain exactly one provider message. Microsoft Graph move requests use `Prefer: IdType="ImmutableId"`, so retrying the action does not have a multi-message replay window or moved-message-ID instability.

🔇 Additional comments (8)
apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/MessageHTMLSanitizer.swift (3)

460-481: Sanitizer injection bypass is fixed.

resolve and prepare now call sanitizer(html, removesQuotedReplies) unconditionally instead of special-casing MessageHTMLSanitizer.sanitize when removesQuotedReplies is true. This resolves the previously flagged issue where an injected test sanitizer was silently ignored.

Also applies to: 483-506

92-160: Quoted-reply stripping traced against the new regression tests; logic is correct.

I traced removeQuotedReplies, removeReplyAttribution, and isReplyAttribution against testThreadHTMLPresentationOmitsQuotedReplyHistory in MailboxConnectionAdapterTests.swift line by line (gmail_quote removal, blockquote+preceding-attribution removal across <br> separators, and the reverse own-text attribution scan). All assertions match. The element.parent() != nil guard in the reverse-order scan correctly prevents reprocessing already-detached elements.

509-539: LGTM!

apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/MailboxConnectionAdapterTests.swift (1)

8347-8458: Retention test for the default path is now present; approve.

testThreadHTMLPresentationOmitsQuotedReplyHistory now includes singleMessageResult (sanitized without removesQuotedReplies) and asserts it still contains "Previous message". This resolves the previously flagged gap where no test covered the default retention path. The suite is deterministic, has no sleeps, and exercises externally observable HTML/plain-text output.

apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/MessageHTMLPresentationTests.swift (1)

2306-2358: LGTM!

Also applies to: 2456-2481

CONTEXT.md (1)

638-639: Past wording contradiction is fixed.

Line 852 now reads "every message expanded and ordered newest to oldest," matching line 638 and the implementation (thread.messages.reversed()). This resolves the previously flagged "chronological order" contradiction.

Also applies to: 852-852

apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Features/Account/AccountView.swift (2)

1746-1771: Three previously flagged issues are now fixed.

  • Line 1746-1771: the synchronization overlay now uses .overlay(alignment: .bottom) instead of safeAreaInset, so it no longer resizes the Threads viewport.
  • Line 2901-2911: MailViewPresentation.systemImage now looks up SystemCategoryDefinition.all.first { $0.id == categoryId }?.symbolName ?? "tag" instead of duplicating a hardcoded icon mapping.
  • Line 4439-4441: displayedThreadSelection now returns $selectedThreadIds unconditionally, restoring live multi-selection accumulation on Catalyst.

Also applies to: 2901-2911, 4439-4441

5278-5322: 🚀 Performance & Scalability

Verify body-load-gate concurrency with the newly expanded conversation reader.

MailShellMessageBody.load() acquires loadedImageBudget.bodyLoadGate, a single-slot gate shared per account (RemoteMessageContentLoadGate.acquire() grants only one holder at a time). Previously, only one message body loaded concurrently, since only one message was expanded. Now ForEach(thread.messages.reversed()) renders every message's body view, so multiple MailShellMessageBody.load() tasks can start concurrently as the user scrolls through a thread.

Confirm whether this single-slot gate is intended to serialize body loading across a whole visible thread (acceptable if each message shows its own per-message loading indicator while queued) or whether it should allow bounded concurrency now that multiple message bodies are expected to load at once.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

Microsoft Graph move requests use `Prefer: IdType="ImmutableId"`, so retrying the action does not have a multi-message replay window or moved-message-ID instability.

This is deliberate: propagating the error would conflict with the account-switch requirement that a new sign-in must succeed even when the old Apple identity token has expired, and there is currently no retry/cleanup path to trigger. A durable retry design that does not retain/revive obsolete credentials would be needed before propagating this failure.

890-890: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Add focused tests for close-only dismissal and notification-rule discard behavior.

The code changes the dismissal contract and adds notificationRuleViewModel to the unsaved-change path. The supplied tests cover registry metadata and pure navigation decisions, but they do not exercise AdaptiveSettingsScene with showsDismissButton, the Close Settings action, or notification rules while isSaving. Add tests for clean close, discard confirmation, disabled discard during save, and the signed-out and failed hosts.

As per path instructions: “Require focused tests for changed behavior and failure paths.”

Reload notification rules when the product account changes.

NotificationsSettingsView loads rules only when it appears. When snapshot.productAccountId changes, updateSession(_:) does not clear or reload profiles or syncedRules. The view can display and save the previous account’s rules under the new account. Key the loading task by snapshot.productAccountId, or reload authoritative rules after the change.

Add a fallback assertion for the enabled quoted-reply flag.

The test now confirms that resolve forwards removesQuotedReplies to the injected sanitizer. It does not cover the plain-text fallback while that flag is true. resolve trims the plain-text presentation when quoted-reply removal is enabled, so the fallback text differs from the default path. Lines 2319 to 2324 exercise the fallback only with the default flag.

Add one case that returns nil from the sanitizer with removesQuotedReplies: true and asserts the trimmed fallback text.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/IMAPMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, `MailboxConnectionRouter.loadConnections(session:)` intentionally degrades gracefully when the IMAP adapter fails by treating its connection list as empty, so Gmail connections remain available. Learning: For Gmail mailbox cleanup, `packages/convex/convex/pushRelay.ts` implements `pushRelay:removeGmailConnection` as an idempotent mutation: an absent operational Gmail connection returns successfully with `removed: false` and independently computed `hasRemainingGmailConnections`. `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Convex/ConvexClient.swift` intentionally exposes only `hasRemainingGmailConnections` through `ConvexClient.removeGmailConnection`; do not require tests for a duplicate-removal error path.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`, failures from `devicePushUnregistrationService.unregister(session:)` (called from `unregisterDeviceIfProductAccountChanged` and `signOut`) are intentionally swallowed with `try?`.
