Closes #393

Summary

  • synchronize Quiet / Resume as encrypted Mail Profile state across Trusted Devices
  • add device-local Profile Lock with device-owner authentication and a five-minute default grace period
  • conceal locked mail from rendering, interaction, accessibility, notifications, proactive suggestions, and Spotlight without suspending background mail work
  • expose Quiet and Profile Lock controls in implemented Notifications settings

Validation

Passed:

  • pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
  • pnpm lint
  • pnpm format
  • pnpm turbo run check-types
  • pnpm test
  • pnpm fallow
  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh
  • Debug build-for-testing on iPhone 17 simulator D6D43A14-3B1A-41B6-B25A-0DFCA1BFB089
  • focused Quiet/Profile Lock, two-device convergence, notification, settings, and Gmail overlap regression tests
  • Debug mixed-connection scenarios
  • Release build-for-testing and cached-presentation performance fixture
  • plutil -lint for Info.plist and project.pbxproj
  • git diff --check

Failed / requires follow-up:

  • The broad Debug pass completed 1,841 tests but MicrosoftGraphMailboxConnectionAdapterTests.testLegacyMetadataContractRebuildsBeforeHistoricalBackfill() failed. The isolated rerun reproduced client.requestedContinuations == [nil, nil] where the existing test expects [nil]; this branch does not modify the Microsoft Graph adapter or that test.
  • mise exec -- pnpm mail:test run core-mail-loop --json failed in MailTestBootstrapUITests.testOpenMessageThroughVisibleClient() because the fresh harness app never exposed the mail-view-all button within 60 seconds. This was not a Simulator Busy/preflight failure.

Human actions

  • Triage the existing Microsoft Graph metadata-contract expectation or confirm it is an accepted baseline failure.
  • Triage the Core Mail Loop All Mail UI bootstrap failure before merge.

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 37 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Added synchronized, encrypted Quiet state for Mail Profiles. Users can set Quiet indefinitely or until a selected time, then resume it.
  • Quiet suppresses visible notifications and proactive suggestions. Mail synchronization, indexing, Outbox delivery, and Scheduled Send continue.
  • Added device-local Profile Lock per device and Mail Profile. Unlock requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode.
  • Locked Profile content is concealed from the mail UI, search, widgets, Spotlight, accessibility, deep links, and notification previews. Background mail processing continues.
  • Profile Lock re-engages after device lock, explicit locking, or the configurable background grace period, which defaults to five minutes.
  • Added Quiet and Profile Lock controls to the Apple Notifications settings destination.
  • Added Face ID usage configuration and cleared Profile Lock state during account sign-out.
  • Added tests for encrypted cross-device Quiet convergence, Quiet expiration, lock transitions, authentication failures, notification suppression, accessibility, privacy, and background processing.
  • Updated Apple SwiftUI, UIKit, notification, Spotlight, account-session, settings, and Xcode project areas. No TypeScript files are affected.
  • Validation passed for installation, linting, formatting, type checks, tests, builds, focused regression tests, mixed-connection scenarios, performance fixtures, and project-file checks.
  • Existing Microsoft Graph metadata-contract and Core Mail Loop UI bootstrap test failures remain.

Walkthrough

Quiet State now synchronizes per mail profile and suppresses visible notifications and proactive suggestions. Device-local Profile Lock conceals mail content, requires device-owner authentication, removes Spotlight entries, and preserves background mail work. Settings, Gmail push handling, session cleanup, documentation, and tests support these controls.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Mergeability Score: 🔴 Critical · up to 0e4e5

This change adds synchronized Quiet and device-local Profile Lock, but the current revision still has project-file conflicts and concrete privacy and correctness gaps that can expose locked mail or leave controls unavailable; a required UI validation also remains failed. Merge should be blocked until these issues are fixed or explicitly accepted.

- Around line 1420-1455: Update the AccountView presentation handling around
profileInterruptionViewModel.policy.allowsContentReveal so that transitioning to
false dismisses the account settings sheet, compose presentation, category
sheet, and message-action alerts. Reuse the existing presentation state bindings
and dismissal mechanisms, and add focused tests covering each presentation path.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Features/Settings/MailProfileInterruptionSettingsView.swift`:
- Around line 54-69: Update the “Quiet Until Then” and “Quiet Indefinitely”
buttons in MailProfileInterruptionSettingsView to be disabled whenever
viewModel.isSavingQuietState is true, matching the existing “Resume
Interruptions” condition so all three controls prevent overlapping saves.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Gmail/GmailPushRelayService.swift`:
- Around line 1473-1483: Update the visibleNotificationsAreSuppressed flow in
GmailPushRelayService so
notificationSuppressionResolver.visibleNotificationsAreSuppressed(for:session:)

across scheduleGenericFallback and the other call sites. Preserve the current
false fallback when no resolver exists and true fallback when the resolver
throws.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductSync/MailProfileInterruption.swift`:
- Around line 377-387: Update applicationBecameInactive() and
applicationEnteredBackground() to call concealSearchIndex() whenever the lock is
enabled and the lock re-engages. In
docs/adr/0050-separate-synchronized-quiet-from-device-local-profile-lock.md at
line 17, retain the unconditional Spotlight-removal statement because these
background transitions now cover the documented privacy boundary.

Apply the same fix in
`@docs/adr/0050-separate-synchronized-quiet-from-device-local-profile-lock.md` at
line 17.
- Around line 502-515: Update scheduleQuietExpirationRefresh to read
self.clock() once into a local reference time, use it for the endDate guard, and
compute the Task.sleep interval from that same value instead of the cached now
property or a second clock read.
- Around line 313-331: Coordinate concurrent unlock flows in load() and
applicationBecameActive() so a second request awaits the active authenticate()
operation instead of starting another prompt or being rejected. Update the
relevant unlock/authentication state handling while preserving the final
concealment state, and add an interleaving test covering both callers.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/GmailPushRelayServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 4148-4161: Extend StubMailProfileNotificationGate to optionally
throw from visibleNotificationsAreSuppressed, then add focused
GmailPushRelayService tests covering resolver failure and the generic fallback
suppression. Assert both paths deliver no visible notification or generic
fallback while mail sync still completes successfully.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail.xcodeproj/project.pbxproj`, the `GMAIL_OAUTH_CLIENT_ID` and `GMAIL_PUBSUB_TOPIC` build settings are intentionally left empty in both Debug and Release configurations. Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/MailboxConnectionAdapterTests.swift`, `testViewModelRefreshesItsConnectionSnapshotAfterMetadataSync` intentionally verifies an additive metadata refresh: existing mailbox connections may remain while a newly refreshed connection appears, so the test must not assert removal of the original connection.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/GmailMessageMetadataServiceTests.swift`, `testMailboxFreshnessKeepsCoalescedSyncRunningWhenFirstCallerIsCancelled` must release the deliberately suspended shared sync before awaiting the cancelled caller’s `first.value`. The coalesced sync is intentionally kept alive after one caller is cancelled; awaiting that caller before `RecordingMailboxFreshnessService.releaseSync()` deadlocks the test harness.

Learning: For Gmail mailbox cleanup, `packages/convex/convex/pushRelay.ts` implements `pushRelay:removeGmailConnection` as an idempotent mutation: an absent operational Gmail connection returns successfully with `removed: false` and independently computed `hasRemainingGmailConnections`. `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Convex/ConvexClient.swift` intentionally exposes only `hasRemainingGmailConnections` through `ConvexClient.removeGmailConnection`; do not require tests for a duplicate-removal error path.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/IMAPMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, `MailboxConnectionRouter.loadConnections(session:)` intentionally degrades gracefully when the IMAP adapter fails by treating its connection list as empty, so Gmail connections remain available. Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`, failures from `devicePushUnregistrationService.unregister(session:)` (called from `unregisterDeviceIfProductAccountChanged` and `signOut`) are intentionally swallowed with `try?`. This is deliberate: propagating the error would conflict with the account-switch requirement that a new sign-in must succeed even when the old Apple identity token has expired, and there is currently no retry/cleanup path to trigger. A durable retry design that does not retain/revive obsolete credentials would be needed before propagating this failure.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

P1 Badge Regenerate unique Xcode project object IDs

When this iOS/macOS project is opened or built, these new PBXBuildFile IDs collide with existing entries for NotificationRules.swift, NotificationDevicePreferences.swift, and NotificationRuleViewModel.swift earlier in the same objects dictionary. Xcode project object IDs must be unique; with duplicate keys the parser either rejects the project or resolves both build-phase references to only one object, leaving either the new Profile Lock sources or the existing notification sources out of the target and breaking xcodebuild. Please regenerate fresh IDs for the new file/build objects.

P1 Badge Load interruption state for the selected profile

When the restored or switched Mail Profile is not the synchronized default, this no-argument load activates snapshot.defaultProfileId, and the later profile-switch paths never retarget profileInterruptionViewModel. In a multi-profile account, Quiet/Profile Lock policy and the settings screen remain bound to the default profile while the mail UI shows another profile, so a non-default profile can be revealed without its own Profile Lock/Quiet state being applied and changes can be saved to the wrong profile.

Suppress foreground presentation for locked Profiles.

Line 2240 always presents a banner, badge, and sound. A profile-aware notification queued before Profile Lock engages can therefore expose mail content while the Profile is locked.

Resolve the notification Profile from userInfo and fail closed when its device-local Profile Lock is enabled. Preserve presentation for content-free generic fallback notifications. Add focused coverage for a locked profile-aware foreground notification.

Pass the interruption view model to NotificationsSettingsView.

SettingsScene passes nil, so its Notifications screen omits the Profile Interruptions entry while search still exposes Quiet and Profile Lock. Construct the model for the signed-in snapshot, pass it here, and add a focused destination test.

The Apple app must provide formatter, linter, and test commands. Run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh for format and lint, and use the documented xcodebuild test command for tests; SwiftLint runs in strict mode.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/IMAPMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, `MailboxConnectionRouter.loadConnections(session:)` intentionally degrades gracefully when the IMAP adapter fails by treating its connection list as empty, so Gmail connections remain available. Learning: For Gmail mailbox cleanup, `packages/convex/convex/pushRelay.ts` implements `pushRelay:removeGmailConnection` as an idempotent mutation: an absent operational Gmail connection returns successfully with `removed: false` and independently computed `hasRemainingGmailConnections`. `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Convex/ConvexClient.swift` intentionally exposes only `hasRemainingGmailConnections` through `ConvexClient.removeGmailConnection`; do not require tests for a duplicate-removal error path.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Gmail/MessageCategorizationService.swift`, `GmailMessageCategorizationService.classificationCategories(learningSignalSenderAddresses:session:)` must clear the combined background categorization cache when loading future learning signals fails because authentication is unavailable. The cache combines custom-category state (including explicit absence) with exact-sender learning signals; retaining it after a partial authenticated refresh could reuse stale category context. Background notification categorization must fail closed in this case.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/PendingProviderActionServiceTests.swift`, `testCancellingRetryWaiterDoesNotWaitForStalledProviderWork` intentionally allows cancellation both before and after `PendingProviderActionService.waitUntilProcessingFinishes(key:)` registers its continuation. `PendingProviderActionService` supports both paths via the `waitForScheduledRetries(connection:session:)` cancellation loop guard and the cancellation-aware continuation registration/removal logic; do not require an entry synchronization for this test.

Learning: In `packages/convex/test/pushRelay.test.ts` and the Convex push-relay cleanup contract, re-registering an unchanged APNs token and environment deliberately preserves `trustedDevices.pushCleanupGeneration`. A queued APNs HTTP 410 cleanup carrying that generation remains valid and must clear the unchanged route; only a route change that advances the generation is protected from stale cleanup.

Learning: In the Swift Product Sync/Convex integration, `ConvexFunctionEnvelope` exposes only a generic status and optional human-readable `errorMessage`; it has no typed authentication or HTTP-status discriminator. Introducing one requires an explicit backend response-contract change, so callers such as `GmailMessageCategorizationService.backgroundAuthenticationIsUnavailable(_:)` cannot safely replace message-based `ConvexClientError.convexFailure` authentication detection without that coordinated change.

302-338: 🔒 Security & Privacy

No change required: Profile Lock is enforced before delivery

ProductSyncMailProfileNotificationGate checks the device-local lock and suppresses notifications before profile resolution and category delivery.

1007-1007: 🔒 Security & Privacy

Confirm the macOS distribution sandbox policy.

Calendar access is required because the app uses EventKit. Profile Lock uses UserDefaultsMailProfileLockStore, not a Keychain access group. The macOS entitlement lacks com.apple.security.app-sandbox; add it if the app targets Mac App Store distribution.

P1 Badge Check scene generation before revealing locked mail

When Profile Lock is enabled and the foreground Product Sync refresh is slow, an .active scene-phase task can suspend at this await. If the user backgrounds the app again before it returns, applicationEnteredBackground() conceals content and records backgroundedAt, but this older active task can resume afterward and fall through to the non-expired grace path, setting contentIsConcealed = false while the latest scene phase is no longer active. That can undo the lock for app-switcher/background snapshots; keep a scene-phase generation/current-phase check across the await before clearing concealment.
