Closes #392

Summary

  • persist new Mail Profile drafts in device-local protected storage so names and appearance remain editable offline and retry with the same opaque identity
  • add reviewed Profile duplication with an explicit configuration allowlist and re-encryption into the destination Profile scope
  • transfer Mailbox Connection ownership and reviewed custom Categories in one authoritative atomic Product Sync transaction while preserving the stable connection identity and device-local authorization
  • guard Profile deletion on connection ownership and reviewed Draft, Outbox, and pending-action counts, and prevent deletion of the final Profile
  • add a bounded authenticated Convex compare-and-swap transaction for opaque Product Sync records, plus lifecycle, transport, retry, cancellation, concurrent-device, failure, and deletion tests

Validation

Passed:

  • mise exec -- pnpm lint
  • mise exec -- pnpm format
  • mise exec -- pnpm turbo run check-types
  • mise exec -- pnpm test (309 workspace tests; Convex includes 185 tests)
  • mise exec -- pnpm fallow
  • mise exec -- zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh
  • focused Apple lifecycle and Convex transport tests: 64 passed
  • Apple mixed-connection scenarios: 2 passed
  • Apple Release performance build and budget fixture: passed

Unavailable/failing:

  • the broad Apple Debug gate ran 1,835 tests but failed the unrelated, reproducible MicrosoftGraphMailboxConnectionAdapterTests.testLegacyMetadataContractRebuildsBeforeHistoricalBackfill() expectation because requestedContinuations was [nil, nil] instead of [nil]
  • mise exec -- pnpm mail:test run core-mail-loop --json reached UI automation but failed because testOpenMessageThroughVisibleClient() could not find the expected mail-thread-row; the harness reported complete failure cleanup

Human actions

  • resolve or explicitly accept the pre-existing Microsoft Graph metadata-contract test failure before merge
  • investigate the Core Mail Loop visible-client row failure before treating that required gate as satisfied

Review Change Stack

Warning

Review limit reached

You’ve reached a temporary PR review limit under our Fair Usage Limits Policy.

Your recent review volume is higher than typical usage, so adaptive limits are currently applied.

Next review available in: 52 minutes

Enable usage-based reviews in Billing to review now. Otherwise, wait until the next included review is available.
You're only billed for reviews past your plan's rate limits ($0.25/file).

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

Please refer docs for additional details.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary

  • Added offline Mail Profile creation, editing, retry, and reconciliation using protected device-local storage.
  • Added reviewed Profile duplication with an explicit configuration allowlist and destination-scope re-encryption.
  • Added reviewed Mailbox Connection transfers that preserve connection identity and move connection-owned state atomically.
  • Added reviewed custom Category transfer with destination mapping.
  • Added guarded Profile deletion. Deletion requires resolved connections, Drafts, Outbox items, and pending actions. The final Profile cannot be deleted.

Affected areas

  • Apple: Added lifecycle models and MailProfileLifecycleStore. Extended MailboxConnectionSyncService with Profile creation, duplication, transfer, and deletion workflows.
  • TypeScript: Added the authenticated putEncryptedPayloadsAtomically Convex mutation with revision-checked transactions.
  • Transport: Added atomic payload operations to Convex and in-memory Product Sync transports.

Privacy and security

  • Product Sync transactions authenticate trusted devices and validate key epochs, revisions, identifiers, reserved identifiers, and transaction size.
  • Profile duplication excludes connections, provider mail, Drafts, Outbox items, history, Pins, authorizations, and credentials.
  • Copied configuration is re-encrypted for the destination record scope.
  • Revision conflicts return current payloads without committing partial changes.

Migrations and configuration

  • Added ADR 0050.
  • Added a patch changeset for @private-email/convex and unwired-mail.
  • No data migration steps were added.

Validation

  • Added Convex tests for atomic commits, stale revisions, deletions, writes, and concurrent transactions.
  • Added Apple tests for lifecycle, duplication, transfer, cancellation, failure, retry, and deletion behavior.
  • Most validation checks passed.
  • The Apple Debug gate failed on a Microsoft Graph metadata-contract expectation.
  • Core Mail Loop UI automation did not find the expected mail thread row.

Walkthrough

This PR adds offline Mail Profile state, atomic encrypted Product Sync transactions, and reviewed workflows for Profile creation, duplication, Mailbox Connection transfer, and deletion. It also adds transport wiring, persistence, documentation, project registration, and tests.

This PR adds Profile lifecycle, duplication, transfer, and deletion behavior, but it is not merge-ready: duplicate Xcode project identifiers may prevent the app from loading or building, required validation still has failing gates, and several offline retry, data-preservation, and large-Profile transaction paths can fail or lose user changes.

- Around line 436-458: The profile-duplication and connection-transfer mutation
guards must count checks, deletes, and writes against the backend limit of 100
before sending requests. Update the relevant batching/validation methods to
include every `ProductSyncAtomicCheck`, `ProductSyncAtomicDelete`, and
`ProductSyncAtomicWrite` item, throw `MailProfileSyncError.transactionTooLarge`
when the total exceeds 100, and add focused tests for boundary and oversized
cases; do not chunk these atomic mutations.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductSync/MailboxConnectionSyncService.swift`:
- Around line 934-936: Update deleteProfile around the scopedPayloads
transaction-size guard to delete scoped payloads in multiple bounded
transactions instead of throwing when the count exceeds 100. Preserve the
completed scan before starting deletions, and commit Profile removal only in the
final transaction so the lifecycle and failure paths follow ADR 0004.
- Around line 847-850: Split the guard in the lifecycle review flow into
separate checks: keep duplicate payload identifiers throwing
invalidLifecycleReview, and make the writes.count + 1 > 100 condition throw
transactionTooLarge, matching duplicateProfile and deleteProfile.
- Around line 574-584: Update the existing-profile branch in
MailboxConnectionSyncService’s create synchronization flow to treat matching id
and recordScope as sufficient proof that creation committed. Remove the strict
name, appearance, and quietState validation for this branch, return the current
snapshot, and preserve the existing finishCreate reconciliation so divergent
fields become a pending update.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductSync/MailProfileLifecycleStore.swift`:
- Around line 129-134: Update the MailProfileLifecycleStore init and persist
flow to distinguish Keychain access failures from JSON decoding failures: retain
the existing local state and mark it unavailable on read/access errors, while
resetting to .empty only for undecodable payloads. Add or reuse an
isLocalStateUnavailable flag, and make persist() throw when it is set so
createProfile, renameProfile, and styleProfile cannot overwrite inaccessible
pending state.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductSync/ProductSyncRecordBoundary.swift`:
- Around line 321-341: The pagination loop in the product payload retrieval flow
must enforce a finite maximum page count. Add an explicit page-limit constant or
bound near the existing pagination configuration, track pages processed around
the repeat loop, and throw ProductSyncRecordBoundaryError.incompletePagination
once the bound is exceeded while preserving the existing cursor and completion
checks.
- Around line 194-211: Remove the default ProductSyncRecordTransport
implementation of putEncryptedProductSyncPayloadsAtomically so conforming
transports must implement it at compile time; update any test doubles that rely
on the fallback, or split the protocol to isolate atomic transports while
preserving compiler enforcement for MailboxConnectionSyncService callers.
- Around line 360-374: Update reencryptedPayload and the atomic-write flows in
duplicateProfile and transferConnection to reconcile any pending Product Sync
key rotation before encrypting the payload. Ensure re-encryption uses the
reconciled current key material/version so the resulting transaction satisfies
backend rotation requirements.

In
`@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductSync/ProductSyncRecordTransport.swift`:
- Around line 341-348: The uncommitted path in ProductSyncRecordTransport must
return only payloads for identifiers requested by the current sync operation,
matching the backend’s existingPayloads behavior. Update the payload filtering
inside the allMatch guard to use the identifiers from checks, deletes, and
writes, while preserving the account scoping and committed == false result.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/ConvexClientTests.swift`:
- Around line 984-994: Expand the test covering every revision guard mapping to
assert the checks, deletes, and writes array counts plus both expectedUpdatedAt
and payloadIdentifier values for each entry, and verify the serialized
encryptedPayload contents against the input. Match the field coverage used by
testConditionalProductSyncWriteMapsExpectedRevision, then add a committed: false
response case and assert the caller’s corresponding behavior.

In `@apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/MailboxConnectionSyncServiceTests.swift`:
- Around line 1595-1649: Add a test near
testTransferFailureAndCancellationLeaveOwnershipAndCopiesUnchanged that creates
a transfer review from the initial profile snapshot, advances the authoritative
profile revision via services.secondDevice.saveProfile, then verifies
transferConnection throws MailProfileSyncError.concurrentModification and leaves
the connection assigned to profiles.defaultProfileId. Also add coverage for
deleteProfile using a stale lifecycle review, asserting
MailProfileSyncError.invalidLifecycleReview and unchanged profile state.

In `@CONTEXT.md`:
- Line 503: Replace “transient pins” with the precise domain term “Pins” in
CONTEXT.md lines 503-503 and
docs/adr/0050-commit-mail-profile-lifecycle-atomically.md lines 20-20; make no
code changes, as the exclusion behavior is already correct.

In `@packages/convex/convex/productSync.ts`:
- Around line 177-211: Add focused Convex tests for
putEncryptedPayloadsAtomically covering unauthorized access, malformed input,
empty and oversized transactions, duplicate and reserved payload identifiers,
and stale key epochs, while retaining success coverage. Exercise each rejection
guard and authorization boundary using the existing productSync test helpers so
the handler’s branches are covered without changing runtime behavior.
- Around line 250-266: Update the insert branch in the writes loop to call
insertPayload with only the fields it requires from args and write, rather than
spreading the entire args object. Preserve the existing account.productAccountId
argument and keep the explicit updatePayload fields unchanged.

In `@packages/convex/test/productSync.test.ts`:
- Around line 389-392: Update the assertion for
getEncryptedPayloadsForTrustedDevice in productSync.test.ts to verify each
returned updatedAt by its associated identifier rather than comparing the array
positionally. Preserve the expected first and second records while making the
test independent of result ordering.
- Around line 400-442: Rename the test currently titled “allows only one
concurrent transaction to commit the same revision” to describe compare-and-swap
rejection when a revision is reused, reflecting that the mutations are
serialized rather than concurrent. Keep the test setup, assertions, and behavior
unchanged.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

Use globally unique PBX object identifiers.

71A6A240 and 71A6A242 already identify the NotificationRules and NotificationDevicePreferences PBXBuildFile objects at Lines 54-55. 71A6A241 and 71A6A243 already identify their PBXFileReference objects at Lines 218-219. The lifecycle entries reuse those IDs.

This creates duplicate keys in the project object table. Xcode can load the wrong object or reject the project. Generate new IDs and update all group and Sources references consistently.

📄 CodeRabbit inference engine (AGENTS.md)

The Apple app must provide formatter, linter, and test commands. Run zsh scripts/check-apple-lint.zsh for format and lint, and use the documented xcodebuild test command for tests; SwiftLint runs in strict mode.

📄 CodeRabbit inference engine (AGENTS.md)

Apple validation must use SwiftLint strict mode and Swift Format strict linting; if Apple tooling is unavailable, report that clearly in the final handoff.

apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift: Prioritize functional correctness, data protection, and Apple platform
behavior over style already enforced by swift-format and SwiftLint.
Check actor isolation, cancellation, lifecycle transitions, persistence,
retry and offline behavior, and Keychain accessibility. Flag credentials,
tokens, mail content, or decrypted Product Sync data that can be logged,
persisted outside approved device-local storage, or cross a documented
privacy boundary. Require focused tests for changed behavior and failure
paths.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/MailboxConnectionAdapterTests.swift`, `testViewModelRefreshesItsConnectionSnapshotAfterMetadataSync` intentionally verifies an additive metadata refresh: existing mailbox connections may remain while a newly refreshed connection appears, so the test must not assert removal of the original connection.

Learning: For the Swift EWS mail provider, `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/OutboxDeliveryService.swift` and `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/PendingProviderActionService.swift` deliberately use different EWS failure-disposition policies. Outbox uncertain send handoffs classify HTTP 5xx, HTTP 408/409/425, `ErrorTimeoutExpired`, and invalid EWS responses as ambiguous and reconcile delivery before another send to prevent duplicates; provider actions treat their retry-safe EWS response cases as transient retries. Do not extract their classification logic into a shared helper merely because response-code checks overlap.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/MicrosoftGraphMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, queued Microsoft Graph pending actions contain exactly one provider message. Microsoft Graph move requests use `Prefer: IdType="ImmutableId"`, so retrying the action does not have a multi-message replay window or moved-message-ID instability.

Learning: For Gmail mailbox cleanup, `packages/convex/convex/pushRelay.ts` implements `pushRelay:removeGmailConnection` as an idempotent mutation: an absent operational Gmail connection returns successfully with `removed: false` and independently computed `hasRemainingGmailConnections`. `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Convex/ConvexClient.swift` intentionally exposes only `hasRemainingGmailConnections` through `ConvexClient.removeGmailConnection`; do not require tests for a duplicate-removal error path.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mailTests/GmailMessageMetadataServiceTests.swift`, `testMailboxFreshnessKeepsCoalescedSyncRunningWhenFirstCallerIsCancelled` must release the deliberately suspended shared sync before awaiting the cancelled caller’s `first.value`. The coalesced sync is intentionally kept alive after one caller is cancelled; awaiting that caller before `RecordingMailboxFreshnessService.releaseSync()` deadlocks the test harness.

File: apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift:211-223
Timestamp: 2026-07-14T12:29:34.784Z
Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/ProductAccount/ProductAccountSession.swift`, failures from `devicePushUnregistrationService.unregister(session:)` (called from `unregisterDeviceIfProductAccountChanged` and `signOut`) are intentionally swallowed with `try?`. This is deliberate: propagating the error would conflict with the account-switch requirement that a new sign-in must succeed even when the old Apple identity token has expired, and there is currently no retry/cleanup path to trigger. A durable retry design that does not retain/revive obsolete credentials would be needed before propagating this failure.

Learning: In `apps/unwired-mail/unwired-mail/Services/Mailbox/IMAPMailboxConnectionAdapter.swift`, `MailboxConnectionRouter.loadConnections(session:)` intentionally degrades gracefully when the IMAP adapter fails by treating its connection list as empty, so Gmail connections remain available. The intended composite-provider failure semantics are deferred to GitHub issue `#149`; do not flag this behavior as inconsistent error handling until that decision is made.

557-563: Preserve create retry after a lost response.

If the create commits but its response is lost, MailProfileLifecycleStore can rename the pending profile before retry. The existing-ID branch still requires the remote name and appearance to match. The retry then throws instead of letting finishCreate convert the rename into a pending update.

Treat matching profile ID and .profile(profileId) scope as proof of the committed create, then reconcile changed fields in finishCreate.

As per path instructions for apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift, retry and offline behavior require review.

Source: Path instructions

847-850: Return the correct error for an oversized transaction.

The transfer guard maps duplicate identifiers and writes.count + 1 > 100 to invalidLifecycleReview. The size condition needs transactionTooLarge, as used by the other lifecycle operations. Split the checks so users receive the correct bounded-transaction error.

934-936: Allow deletion of profiles with large scoped state.

The single-transaction limit makes profiles with 100 or more scoped payloads undeletable. Scan first, delete scoped payloads in bounded transactions, and remove the profile in the final transaction.

As per path instructions for apps/unwired-mail/**/*.swift, lifecycle transitions and failure paths require review.

P1 Badge Keep deletion atomic for large profile scopes

When the profile owns more than 99 scoped payloads, this loop commits delete chunks before the final transaction that removes the Profile record. If cancellation happens after a chunk, or the final Profile CAS loses a race, the method returns an error while the Profile still exists with some of its scoped settings already deleted, which is exactly the partial lifecycle state this atomic path is meant to avoid; delete the Profile record in the first committed transaction and make any extra cleanup resumable instead of pre-deleting data.

P2 Badge Remove the non-workspace package from the changeset

The changeset names unwired-mail, but there is no workspace package with that name in any package.json under apps/ or packages/; the Apple app is an Xcode project, while the only package names in this workspace are the @private-email/* packages. Leaving this entry means package versioning/release tooling has an unknown package to resolve, so the release note should either target an actual package or omit the Apple app from Changesets.
