GitHub Pages Tutorial

Ted Laderas, Robin Champieux, and Eric Leung

Welcome to the GitHub Pages Tutorial!

With a text editor and GitHub Desktop, you can create a personal website on GitHub. Bring your laptop and we'll explore the fun world of GitHub Pages!

🎆🎉👻🍄🎸✨🎆🎉👻🍄🎸✨🎆🎉

What You Need to Start

  • A GitHub Account
  • GitHub Desktop
  • Text Editor (we prefer Sublime, but Atom is also good)
  • File Manager (to rename files)
    • Windows Explorer or Mac OS Finder (whatever you have)
  • Something to say
  • Pictures (optional)

You may want to spend a little time learning how to use markdown, as it'll make putting your content together faster. There is a tutorial here: The Magic of Markdown

Getting Started

If you want to use GitHub Desktop when setting up your website, open up intermediate/githubPagesTutorial.Rmd. Then it's just a matter of following directions.

Our easier version is available in easy/tutorialEasyVersion.Rmd. It only requires a laptop and a GitHub account.

During the workshop, be sure to use your Post-Its if you're stuck, and one of us will help you.

Attribution

This tutorial uses Mark Otto's Hyde Template for Jekyll with some simple modifications to make it Jeykll 3.0 Compatible
