Potential fix for https://github.com/dchou1618/python-examples/security/code-scanning/2

Add an explicit top-level permissions block in .github/workflows/cicd.yml so all jobs inherit restricted token access by default.

Best minimal fix (no functionality change): add

permissions:
  contents: read

directly under name (or under on, before jobs).
This satisfies checkout and typical read operations while preventing unnecessary write scope. No imports, methods, or dependencies are needed since this is YAML configuration only.

Suggested fixes powered by Copilot Autofix. Review carefully before merging.

AI Description

• Add top-level workflow permissions to satisfy code scanning alert.
• Default GITHUB_TOKEN scope to contents: read for least-privilege access.
• Keep CI/CD behavior unchanged while preventing unintended write permissions.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Per-job permissions only
  • ➕ Tightest least-privilege by tailoring scopes to each job
  • ➕ Avoids granting permissions to jobs that don't need them
  • ➖ More verbose and easier to misconfigure across multiple jobs
  • ➖ Higher maintenance when adding new jobs/steps
2. Use `permissions: read-all` at workflow level
  • ➕ Simple and broadly compatible with common actions
  • ➕ Still avoids write permissions by default
  • ➖ Grants more scopes than necessary compared to contents: read
  • ➖ Less aligned with strict least-privilege intent
3. Deny by default (`permissions: {}`) and opt-in per job
  • ➕ Strongest security posture; zero permissions unless explicitly granted
  • ➕ Makes required permissions explicit
  • ➖ Can break common actions (e.g., checkout) unless carefully configured
  • ➖ More review overhead for future workflow edits

Recommendation: The PR’s approach (top-level permissions: contents: read) is the best minimal fix: it satisfies the code-scanning alert, preserves existing workflow behavior for typical checkout/read operations, and establishes a least-privilege default without the maintenance burden of per-job configuration.

Add top-level GITHUB_TOKEN permissions (contents: read)

• Introduces a workflow-level 'permissions' block that restricts the default GITHUB_TOKEN scope to 'contents: read'. This addresses the code scanning alert about missing workflow permissions while keeping job behavior effectively the same for read-only operations like checkout.
