  1. add initial test coverage 

    `make test` now runs 4 tests, including coverage for creating a
connection, calling a service, and getting a response.

Also includes a flag for using a local server instead of the live demo
server.

TODO: the local server test options could be improved to be easier to use
- test command that specifies local
- optionally take config from environment instead of hand-editing file
