Request for option to disable update alerts for minor version upgrades #6966

CLI Feedback

What have you loved?

I really appreciate the simplicity and convenience of using the GitHub CLI.

What was confusing or gave you pause?

I have noticed that the GitHub CLI pops up an alert whenever there is a minor version upgrade available. This can be quite disruptive, especially if I'm working on something important.

Are there features you'd like to see added?

It would be great if there was an option to disable update alerts for minor version upgrades. This would allow me to focus on my work without being disturbed by unnecessary notifications.

Anything else?

Overall, I am very happy with the GitHub CLI and I appreciate the hard work that has gone into making it a valuable tool for developers like myself. Thank you for your consideration.

@erbanku Thanks for writing in. This does seem like a useful feature as we do make minor releases every couple of weeks. The team is currently evaluating the effectiveness of the update checker in general. Rather than giving an option to disable alerts for minor versions, would you rather see it removed completely? Can I ask how you originally installed gh?

Thank you for taking the time to address my concerns.
I wouldn't want the update notification to be completely removed as security updates are important. However, limiting the frequency of notifications for minor releases would be appreciated. As I use gh on multiple devices, the constant appearance of update notifications every time run gh related commands can be disruptive, especially since I only use basic features like creating GitHub Gists, cloning, and pushing repositories. As a general user, I don't need new features, only security updates are relevant to me.
I did install gh according to the official instructions with commands below.

    curl -fsSL https://cli.github.com/packages/githubcli-archive-keyring.gpg | sudo dd of=/usr/share/keyrings/githubcli-archive-keyring.gpg
    echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/githubcli-archive-keyring.gpg] https://cli.github.com/packages stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/github-cli.list > /dev/null
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install gh

@erbanku Thanks for your input. The team did decide that we are going to be moving away from the update prompts starting in #6977. We realized that most of our users, including you, install gh using a package manager. Most package manager have the ability to check for updates and inform the user of outdated packages so we think relying on that mechanism moving forward is the right approach.
