404 error on Apt repository when following Debian installation instructions #1685

Closed

Description

@cunha

Describe the bug

Installation instructions fail on Debian buster.

Steps to reproduce the behavior

  1. Follow instructions under Linux Installation Instructions

  2. On Debian buster, sudo apt-add-repository -u https://cli.github.com/packages sets the repository distro to the release name (buster), which does not seem to exist.

  3. Attempting to update the Apt cache fails with a 404 error.

Steps to fix the error

  1. Edit /etc/apt/sources.list and rename the distro name to stable (from buster).

It seems like specifying the complete repository string as a parameter to apt-add-repository would do the trick, at least for Debian users:

sudo apt-add-repository -u "deb https://cli.github.com/packages stable main"

Expected vs actual behavior

Seamless installation was to be expected, but manual editing of /etc/apt/sources.list was necessary.

Logs

    @cunha Thank you for reporting!

    @vilmibm Would adding support for Debian buster be as straightforward as explicitly listing Ubuntu versions as supported? Ref. #1615 #1637

    Just manually added packages for: oldstable, testing, unstable, stretch, buster, jessie, bullseye

    @eMPee584

    add-apt-repository has the unwanted habit of rewriting all files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ unconditionally and the containing package is not installed by default on debian, so the equivalent command `echo "deb https://cli.github.com/packages stable main | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/github.list" would be a nice addition to the install section..
