Found while diagnosing an invalid regular expression passed to Django's SQLite regexp function.

Summary

  • Route scalar, aggregate, window, authorizer, progress and trace callback failures through sys.unraisablehook, with the callback identified in the diagnostic message.
  • Run callback formatting and the hook after the enclosing operation releases its locks, allowing reentrant database access.
  • Report oversized expanded SQL as DataError before falling back to the original SQL for the trace callback.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • SQLite callback failures are now reported through Python’s unraisable exception handler when callback tracebacks are enabled, making errors easier to diagnose.
    • Failures in authorizer and progress handlers continue to deny or interrupt the operation while also reporting the exception.
    • Trace callback failures are reported, and missing expanded SQL now produces an appropriate error or falls back to the original SQL.
    • Exceptions during SQLite result conversion are also reported through the associated callback.

Walkthrough

SQLite callback exceptions are now reported through sys.unraisablehook when callback tracebacks are enabled. Callback failures retain their existing SQLite return behavior. Trace callbacks also handle expanded-SQL failures separately.

Changes: SQLite callback exception reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Deferred exception reporting
crates/stdlib/src/_sqlite3.rs
CallbackData defers exception reporting through the VM’s unraisable-exception handler. Result-conversion exceptions now use the callback callable for reporting.
SQLite callback error handling
crates/stdlib/src/_sqlite3.rs
Authorizer, trace, and progress callback failures are reported. Authorizer failures still return SQLITE_DENY, and progress-handler failures still return -1. Trace callbacks report callback errors; when expanded SQL is unavailable, SQLITE_NOMEM becomes MemoryError, while other failures report DataError and pass the original SQL to the callback.

The change improves SQLite callback diagnostics, with a bounded concern that expanded-SQL failures may report the wrong exception type. This is suitable for owner-aware follow-up rather than blocking merge.
