Summary

Repair dictionary insertion and setdefault slot selection under concurrent table mutation, retaining callback precedence and one-shot preparation. Includes the whole canonical free-threading dict test file.

This is a functionality-based extraction from #9439, based on main 84d7afc2d59e05c66c92df3ce0854679d2b32b52. The original aggregate is being narrowed to monitoring. The extracted files are preserved exactly from the reviewed aggregate source.

All included Lib files were regenerated with actual scripts/update_lib migrate from CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc and match that pin byte-for-byte. No test file is split across PRs and no assertions or skips are added.

Validation and limits

Five finite native table-invariant fixtures are assigned to this unit. Earlier aggregate ordinary dict results are historical and do not validate this fresh-main branch.

Fresh standalone VM check and strict Clippy (-D warnings) passed with --lib --tests --no-default-features --features compiler,threading,host_env,stdio,doc,importlib on the 84d7 base. A freshly built VM test executable from this worktree passed exactly five existing structural fixtures, one at a time. Source and protected executable hashes were verified; dependencies were locked/offline. No Python concurrency or crash tests were run locally. Exact-head hosted CI: pending. Old aggregate green checks are historical, not standalone validation of this extraction.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved the reliability of dictionary insertions and default-value operations when the dictionary changes during processing. Existing entries are preserved, and updates correctly account for changes to available slots.
    • Strengthened safeguards around dictionary mutations to help keep contents consistent across insertion and default-value paths.

Extract dictionary insertion and setdefault re-probing from RustPython#9439 with its five structural fixtures and whole canonical free-threading test. Regenerate the Lib file with scripts/update_lib from CPython d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc.

Walkthrough

Dictionary mutations now share a probe-and-commit path. The path can release the write lock for key or default preparation, then validate the saved probe route before committing. Tests cover table invariants and mutations that occur during preparation.

Changes: Dictionary mutation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Probe validation and commit
crates/vm/src/dict_inner.rs
The shared mutation helper probes under the write lock, releases it for preparation when required, and validates the saved route before committing or retrying.
Mutation API integration
crates/vm/src/dict_inner.rs
insert_indexed, delete_or_insert, and setdefault_entry use the shared mutation path. setdefault delegates to setdefault_entry.
Invariant and preparation tests
crates/vm/src/dict_inner.rs
Tests check table invariants and cover resizing, competing insertions, equal-hash keys, and changes to saved vacancies during preparation.

The dictionary changes have no established merge-blocking defect. The two suggested test improvements would strengthen deletion-toggle and callback-mutation coverage; merging remains appropriate subject to normal checks.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 6 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Add key membership checks around the deletion toggle in this test.

The test toggles key 3 at lines 2083 and 2086 without checking whether the key is present. The filled comparison at lines 2085-2087 cannot detect a missing deletion, because a deleted slot becomes DUMMY and DUMMY still counts toward filled. A deletion that does nothing can therefore pass the assertions in this test, including the final length check. Asserting that key 3 is absent after the first toggle and present after the second would make the test fail if deletion or reinsertion does nothing.

`filled` and table-invariant checks.

2253-2258: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Add a same-size test where an occupied prefix bucket is replaced during preparation.

The new same-size fixtures cover a terminal FREE winner and DUMMY consumption. They do not cover replacing an occupied prefix bucket. A regression that skips the occupied-prefix witness checks during revalidation would still pass these fixtures. The current code handles this case correctly, so this is a test-coverage gap, not a present defect.

Add a fixture with this sequence:

  1. Insert a colliding occupant before the selected vacancy.
  2. In the preparation factory, delete that occupant and insert the requested key into its former bucket. Return a different value.
  3. Assert the returned value, get for the requested key, len(), and assert_table_invariants. These checks detect a second copy of the requested key at the stale vacancy.
