Found while importing SQLAlchemy's ORM: a nested class with conditional annotations failed to compile.

Summary

  • Keep a class scope's own free variables separate from free variables requested by its children. Implicit class cells resolve child requests without discarding the class's enclosing closure requirements.
  • Allow conditional annotations in nested classes while preserving declaration checks for global and nonlocal.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Corrected how names are handled in nested class scopes, improving type-hint results for conditional annotations in both standard and future-annotation modes.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for conditional annotations in nested classes and for syntax errors involving a global declaration after a conditional annotation.

Walkthrough

The symbol table analyzer now handles current-scope free names separately from names processed as class implicit cells. Tests cover conditional annotations in nested classes and a SyntaxError case involving a subsequent global declaration.

Changes: Class free-name handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Free-name analysis and annotation tests
crates/codegen/src/symboltable.rs, extra_tests/snippets/syntax_annotations.py
The analyzer collects current-scope free names separately and adds them to the result after class-specific processing. Tests cover nested-class conditional annotations in both annotation modes and a SyntaxError when a global __conditional_annotations__ declaration follows a conditional annotation.

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: youknowone

Merge Risk: Low · up to a2f22

The change is mergeable with a small test follow-up: assert that the enclosing class has no type hints in both annotation modes. No production defect is established.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Preserve enclosing free variables when analyzing class scopes" matches the main change. The raw summary says the analyzer now keeps the current scope's free names in a separate scope_free set, so class implicit free names no longer consume the free names that children request. The PR objectives describe the same goal: keeping a class scope's own free variables separate from child-requested variables. The title is specific and short. It does not mention the conditional-annotation fix in nested classes, but that is a secondary part of the change.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.

Assert that Outer has no type hints.

The loop checks only Outer.Inner. If included leaked into Outer's annotations, this check would still pass. Add an assertion for Outer inside the loop. It covers the rule stated in the block comment: conditional annotations belong to the inner class.

Suggested fix
     assert get_type_hints(namespace["Outer"].Inner) == {"included": int}
+    assert get_type_hints(namespace["Outer"]) == {}

Add an assertion alongside the `Outer.Inner` check to verify
`get_type_hints(namespace["Outer"])` is empty, ensuring conditional annotations
remain confined to the inner class.
