Implement supports_effective_ids which requires the syscall
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
os.access can check paths relative to a directory descriptor and supports effective-ID checks and symlink handling where available.
Support information now reflects platform availability for these options. Effective-ID checks are unavailable on Android, ESP-IDF, Horizon, and Vita; directory descriptors are unavailable on Android, ESP-IDF, Horizon, and Vita; and disabling symlink following is unavailable on ESP-IDF, Horizon, and Vita.
Access checks return false when the underlying system check fails.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
os.access now passes supported directory-descriptor, effective-ID, and symlink-following options to the POSIX host check. The OS module reports platform-specific support for directory descriptors and effective IDs.
The host check accepts a directory descriptor and effective-ID and symlink-following flags. Unix-like targets call accessat; the function returns true on success and false on any syscall error. Invalid access masks return AccessError::InvalidMode.

Return false when accessat rejects the probe
When the probed path is absent or inaccessible, rustix::fs::accessat returns ENOENT/EACCES and this chain converts that into Err; posix::access then turns it into a Python exception. os.access must instead return False for these normal negative probes (as the existing assertions in extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_os.py:634-639 require), so callers checking a missing or permission-denied path now get FileNotFoundError/PermissionError rather than a boolean.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Advertise the access options that are implemented
On Unix targets handled by the new rustix path, AccessArgs now accepts a dir_fd and check_access applies both dir_fd and follow_symlinks, but this registration still marks dir_fd false and follow_symlinks absent. module_exec consequently leaves os.access out of os.supports_dir_fd and os.supports_follow_symlinks, causing capability-aware callers—and TestPosixDirFd.test_access_dir_fd—to skip options that now work; set these flags with the same platform gates as the implementation.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
Disable dir_fd where the fallback ignores it
On ESP-IDF, Horizon, and Vita, this constant now gives AccessArgs a one-element DirFd parser, so calls with dir_fd are accepted, but those targets select the fallback check_access at crates/host_env/src/posix.rs:1034-1063, which ignores dir_fd and runs metadata(path) relative to the current working directory. A relative path can therefore report permissions for a different file instead of raising NotImplementedError; exclude these fallback targets from ACCESS_DIR_FD or implement an at-style lookup.
Gate fs::accessat out of the Redox build of host_env.
posix_unix_like::check_access calls fs::accessat. Its cfg excludes only espidf, horizon, and vita, so the function is compiled for Redox. rustix 1.1.5 does not provide accessat on Redox, so the host_env crate does not build for that target. os.access is also advertised in supports_effective_ids on Redox, which describes a call path that cannot compile there.
Redox needs to take the metadata-based path, and the base rejections must stay in place:
Add target_os = "redox" to the cfg gate of posix_unix_like::check_access.
Add target_os = "redox" to the cfg gate that selects the metadata-based posix::check_access, so Redox has exactly one implementation.
In vm/src/stdlib/posix.rsaccess, add target_os = "redox" to the effective_ids and follow_symlinks rejection gates. The base rejected both on every target.
Exclude Redox from the accesseffective_ids advertisement in os.rs.
Confirm that Redox also rejects dir_fd, as the base did. The base used the let [] = args.dir_fd.0 pattern on every target.

Map missing and denied paths to Ok(false) in the Unix check_access.
On Unix, check_access in crates/host_env/src/posix_unix_like.rs returns every accessat failure as an error. The VM binding turns that error into an OSError. For a missing path, or a path whose parent directory is not searchable, os.access now raises instead of returning False. The base implementation returned False for these inputs.
Keep the Err path for other failures, such as invalid flags. Map only the existence and permission failures to Ok(false):
This matches the documented os.access contract, which returns False when access is denied or the path does not exist. The base merge-base behavior also returned False for any metadata failure. This fix covers the reported ENOENT and EACCES cases. Other errors, such as ENOTDIR or ELOOP, still raise. Decide whether they should also return False to match base.

Set dir_fd and follow_symlinks for access to match its binding.
The access binding accepts dir_fd on Unix. It also accepts follow_symlinks=False there. os.supports_dir_fd and os.supports_follow_symlinks still omit access. Code that checks these sets skips a supported path.
On espidf, horizon, and vita, the binding rejects follow_symlinks=False and dir_fd. Set follow_symlinks to Some(true) would advertise support that those platforms do not provide. Derive both flags from the same gates the binding uses.

Defer dir_fd validation for absolute paths in os.access (pre-existing follow-up).
os.access(path, dir_fd=-1) raises EBADF during argument parsing when path is absolute. DirFd::from_args converts the keyword value with crt_fd::Borrowed::try_borrow_raw, which rejects -1. The error propagates before check_access runs. With an absolute path, the faccessat contract ignores dirfd, so the rejected descriptor is never used. The rejection is therefore premature for that input.
This is pre-existing. The base revision b25ab5e76b1f287e3599bd60a58b65abf167de7b has the same parse-time rejection, and this PR does not change the -1 handling. The change moves access onto the shared DirFd parser but does not alter that path.
A follow-up fix could read dir_fd as a raw value in AccessArgs. It would validate and borrow the descriptor only when path is relative. The current check_access parameter type was not inspected, and the change may touch the shared DirFd parser. Scope the change so other DirFd consumers keep their current behavior. No localized patch is established, so no diff is provided.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base b25ab5e76b1f); the change keeps it reachable.

Android builds fail: AtFlags::EACCESS is not defined for Android.
check_access compiles on Android, but the AtFlags::EACCESS reference inside it is not cfg-gated. On Android, rustix::fs::AtFlags comes from rustix's libc backend, which defines EACCESS only for targets other than Android. The reference fails to resolve at compile time, even though effective_ids is false at runtime for Android callers.

Map missing-path and access-denied errors to Ok(false) in Unix check_access.
On Unix-like targets, check_access returns Ok(true) when accessat fails with ENOENT or EACCES. os.access passes that boolean through unchanged, so a nonexistent path or a path denied by permissions reports as accessible. The same function should return Ok(false) for these two errors. Only unexpected errors should still propagate as Err.

Return False for ENOTDIR and ELOOP in check_access.
On Unix builds, check_access now returns Err for ENOTDIR and ELOOP. The os.access binding converts that error to an OSError. The merge-base implementation returned False for these path failures. A path with a regular file as an intermediate component, or a symlink loop, now raises instead of returning False.

Treat every failed accessat probe as false
Although the new arm fixes ENOENT/EACCES, a probe whose path has a regular-file component (for example, <tempfile>/child) makes accessat return ENOTDIR; this branch propagates it, and posix::access converts it to NotADirectoryError. os.access is a boolean probe, and the previous metadata implementation returned False for every lookup error, so callers must also get False for ENOTDIR and similar ELOOP/ENAMETOOLONG failures rather than an exception.

Keep the invalid-mode check on Linux and macOS.
The move of check_access into posix_unix_like.rs removed the AccessMode::from_bits validation for every target except espidf, horizon, and vita. At the merge base, os.access(path, 8) raised ValueError through AccessError::InvalidMode. At head, the same call on Linux or macOS passes the raw bit to accessat. The syscall rejects it with EINVAL, and the error reaches Python as OSError. This changes the exception type for an invalid argument.
Restore the validation before accessat and return AccessError::InvalidMode for unsupported bits. Make check_access return Result<bool, AccessError> in posix_unix_like.rs, and update its caller in crates/vm/src/stdlib/posix.rs to convert the error with to_pyexception. Any unsupported bit then raises ValueError again on all targets.

Review comment at @crates/host_env/src/posix_unix_like.rs around lines 25 - 26:
Update check_access in posix_unix_like.rs to validate access bits with
AccessMode::from_bits before constructing Access, returning
AccessError::InvalidMode for unsupported bits and changing the function to
return Result<bool, AccessError>. Update its caller in posix.rs to convert that
error with to_pyexception, preserving ValueError behavior for invalid modes.

Reject unsupported follow_symlinks=False on Android.
On Android, os.access(..., follow_symlinks=False) passes AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW to Bionic’s faccessat. Bionic rejects nonzero flags with EINVAL, which check_access propagates as OSError instead of returning an access result.

Update the platform guard for unsupported `follow_symlinks` handling to include
Android, so `follow_symlinks=False` is rejected before
`AtFlags::SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW` reaches Bionic’s `faccessat`.

Map ENAMETOOLONG to Ok(false) in check_access.
On Unix, check_access returns an error for accessat failures other than NOENT and ACCESS. A path that exceeds the name-length limit reaches the Err(e) => Err(e.into()) arm, so os.access raises an exception instead of returning False. The merge-base implementation returned False for every crate::fs::metadata error, so this is a regression.

Withhold this duplicate finding.
The metadata omission is real, but Android must not be included: Bionic rejects AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW with EINVAL. Redox must also remain excluded because pinned rustix does not provide accessat there.
The same metadata correction was already published in finding b03c20894e44ed5ad3150caff98559f8ce0e37e7. No fix or reintroduction was established, so do not repost it.

Handle kernels without faccessat2
On Linux kernels before 5.8, rustix's default linux_raw backend has no flagged legacy faccessat, so a nonempty flag set is attempted via faccessat2 and returns ENOSYS. This line converts that into False, even though the new supports_effective_ids set advertises os.access; consequently every existing path queried with effective_ids=True (and direct follow_symlinks=False queries) looks inaccessible on those kernels. Fall back to an implementation that handles the flags or avoid advertising the option when faccessat2 is unavailable.

#### pub const fn union(self, other: Self) -> Self
The bitwise or (`|`) of the bits in two flags values.
Source
#### pub const fn difference(self, other: Self) -> Self
The intersection of a source flags value with the complement of a target flags value (`&!`).
This method is not equivalent to `self & !other` when `other` has unknown bits set. `difference` won’t truncate `other`, but the `!` operator will.

Preserve flagged access checks on older Linux kernels.
On Linux kernels before 5.8, rustix returns ENOSYS for unsupported EACCESS or SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW checks. check_access converts that error to false, so os.access can reject an accessible path. Add a compatible fallback or avoid advertising these options when faccessat2 is unavailable.

Return false for the -1 dir_fd probe
When os.access(..., dir_fd=-1) is used on a supported Unix target, this generic DirFd conversion calls crt_fd::Borrowed::try_borrow_raw, which rejects -1 and raises OSError(EBADF) before check_access can turn the failed probe into False. CPython treats an invalid directory descriptor as a normal access failure (and even ignores it for an absolute path), so the newly advertised dir_fd form can unexpectedly raise; access needs an fd conversion that preserves -1 through the syscall or maps this conversion failure to False.
The original Linux concern is already covered by the published finding "Preserve flagged access checks on older Linux kernels." That finding requests the same two remedies: handle ENOSYS so it does not become False, or withhold the unsupported options. Publication of this Linux correction is withheld.
Handling ENOSYS at the shared check_access result-conversion boundary changes only the error mapping. Withholding the unsupported options is the other remedy. Either one resolves the Linux wrong-False outcome. This review adds no independent Linux correction. The Android follow_symlinks=False case falls outside this Linux scope and is covered by the published finding "Reject unsupported follow_symlinks=False on Android."
Two open points remain, and neither needs a new Linux comment:
The ENOSYS remedy needs an error mapping. The AccessError variants were not inspected, so this review does not supply a code edit for that mapping.
The "decide whether kernels before 5.8 are supported" question has no repository answer. No minimum-kernel policy was found, and transitive rustixuse-libc unification was not ruled out. A different backend could change the behavior, but that does not create a new Linux finding.

* Add an faccessat implementation rather than relying on std
* Adds supports_effective_ids

The feature gates were checked with an LLM which suggested gating
