Summary

Fix internal Windows compatibility issues found while running Lib/test:

  • Correct IPv6 address-family detection and bypass IDNA codec lookup for ASCII socket hostnames.
  • Support Windows mmap(trackfd=False) without retaining a file handle, and close duplicated handles when mapping creation fails.
  • Normalize non-extended directory paths before enumeration, including trailing spaces, while preserving literal extended-path semantics.
  • Match CPython's winsound.PlaySound validation order and reject embedded NUL characters.
  • Discover the loaded executable on Windows instead of assuming argv[0] is its filename.
  • Report the vendored Unicode database version rather than the Rust compiler's version, preventing nightly-only IDNA/SSL initialization failures.

Add Rust regression coverage and remove the two expected-failure markers for the now-passing trailing-space path and winsound tests. Existing assertions and test logic are unchanged.

No ctypes, C API, PyO3, export flags, or CI changes are included.

Validation

Locally on Windows:

  • Related Python regression suites: 54 test files, 53 passed and one Unix-only suite skipped (7,015 tests reported; 1,592 skipped).
  • Temporarily enabling the existing Windows mmap test class at runtime: 43 passed, 8 skipped.
  • Targeted winsound error validation and mismatched executable/argv[0] checks passed.
  • Workspace Rust tests and Clippy passed, excluding the separately configured C API crate, wasm, and venvlauncher.
  • Formatting, diff checks, and all applicable pre-commit hooks passed.

Runtime validation preceded the conflict-free rebase onto latest main; the resulting patch is identical, and pre-commit hooks were rerun after rebasing.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Windows memory mappings now support the trackfd option.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Windows directory listing and path handling, including paths with trailing spaces.
    • Corrected executable path reporting on Windows.
    • Improved hostname and IPv6 address handling without requiring IDNA conversion for ASCII hostnames.
    • Updated the reported Unicode data version to match the bundled data.
    • Added clearer errors for unsupported sound playback options and paths containing null characters.
    • Untracked memory mappings now reject resizing and size queries.

Correct socket address handling, untracked mappings, directory enumeration, winsound validation, and executable path discovery. Report the vendored Unicode version independently of the Rust toolchain.

Walkthrough

This pull request changes Windows memory mapping and filesystem behavior, socket hostname and address handling, Unicode version reporting, executable path lookup, and sound playback validation.

Changes: Memory mapping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Optional Windows mapping names
crates/host_env/src/mmap.rs, crates/stdlib/src/mmap.rs
The Windows mapping function now accepts an optional tag. The mmap constructor uses the direct mapping path when a tag is present or trackfd is false, and stores trackfd in the mapping.
Tracking state and restrictions
crates/stdlib/src/mmap.rs
Resizing is rejected when trackfd is false on Linux and Windows. On Windows, size() raises ValueError for an untracked mapping. A test covers the Windows behavior.

Windows path handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Windows directory scanning and listing
crates/host_env/src/nt.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/os.rs
scandir normalizes nonempty, non-extended paths. Windows listdir uses the native scandir API and returns filename-associated errors for path conversion and entry iteration failures.
Windows executable path lookup
crates/vm/src/getpath.rs
Windows get_executable_path uses env::current_exe(). A Windows test checks the returned path.

Socket hostname and address handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hostname and address encoding
crates/stdlib/src/socket.rs
encode_hostname returns ASCII hostnames unchanged and applies IDNA encoding to non-ASCII names. getaddrinfo and get_addr use the helper, and get_addr checks IPv6 literals for AF_INET6 or AF_UNSPEC. Tests cover ASCII inputs and IPv6 loopback.

Unicode version reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Vendored Unicode version source
crates/unicode/src/data.rs
unicode_version() now extracts the version from the vendored NameAliases.txt header. Tests check that it and Ucd::unidata_version() return 17.0.0.

Sound playback validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
PlaySound input validation
crates/vm/src/stdlib/winsound.rs
PlaySound rejects `SND_ASYNC

Listing an empty Windows volume root may raise an error instead of returning an empty list. The impact is narrow, but the behavior should be corrected or accepted before merging.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Return an empty list for an empty volume root.

If a Windows volume root has no entries, FindFirstFileW can return ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND. host_nt::scandir propagates that error, so os.listdir(root) now raises FileNotFoundError instead of returning []. Preserve the empty-directory behavior without treating a missing directory as empty. (learn.microsoft.com)
