Continues the ctypes scalar fixes from #9251.

Review follow-ups for scalar subclass views and native-call/cast metadata are addressed in #9395.

Summary

  • Use initialized ctypes metadata for scalar reads, constructors, string-array fields, pointer access and native call layouts, preserving the original type after _type_ is reassigned.
  • Read and update bitfields without overwriting adjacent fields, including signed values and swapped byte order. Reject invalid bitfield types and widths.
  • Trace ctypes instance owners, callback closures and type storage so cycles containing these references can be collected.

Performance

Read/write loop, 10,000 iterations:

Platform Access Before After
Windows 11 x64 c_int.value 5.04 ms 3.40 ms
Windows 11 x64 Structure field 4.43 ms 3.10 ms
Debian 12 amd64 c_int.value 4.98 ms 3.13 ms
Debian 12 amd64 Structure field 4.18 ms 2.96 ms

Known limitations

Mixed-type bitfield layout still has pre-existing MSVC/System V compatibility gaps.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • ctypes values and fields now retain their original behavior when a type’s _type_ attribute changes after class creation.
    • Improved bitfield validation and handling, including reads and writes for supported integer and boolean types.
    • Corrected scalar and pointer value handling across ctypes operations.
  • Garbage Collection
    • ctypes objects and their associated type data are now traversed and cleared during garbage collection, allowing otherwise-unreferenced objects to be collected.

Walkthrough

The ctypes implementation now traces type data and references during garbage collection. Scalar handling uses initialized storage metadata. Bitfield validation and descriptor reads and writes use updated width, offset, and byte-order handling.

Changes: ctypes behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Traced type data and ctypes garbage collection
crates/vm/src/types/slot.rs, crates/vm/src/builtins/type.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/..., crates/host_env/src/ctypes.rs, extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py
Type data slots gain traversal and clearing callbacks. PyType and ctypes objects add traversal or clearing for stored references. CallbackThunk exposes its userdata, and the tests check collection of a ctypes reference cycle.
Initialized scalar metadata and ctypes access
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/..., extra_tests/snippets/stdlib_ctypes.py
Scalar codes and layouts use initialized storage metadata. Pointer, simple, and character-array access paths use the stored metadata. Tests check behavior after _type_ changes.
Bitfield validation and descriptor operations
crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/base.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/structure.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ctypes/union.rs
Bitfield widths and scalar types are validated. Structure offsets account for big-endian layouts. Descriptor reads and writes extract, sign-extend, or update the selected bits.

Boolean bitfields can affect neighboring fields, and changing a ctypes class’s type code can produce incorrect native-call handling. These bounded defects should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use initialized ctypes metadata for native-call type codes.

ArgumentType::convert_object and compute_ret_spec read the mutable _type_ attribute instead of the initialized scalar metadata. After _type_ changes, the foreign-call argument or return decoder can use a code that does not match the stored buffer. Use Py<PyType>::type_code, which reads scalar_code first and falls back to _type_ only for uninitialized types.

P2 Badge Preserve user-defined scalar bitfield views

When a bitfield is declared with a user subclass of an integer ctypes type, this unconditional decode returns a plain int; the existing field and pointer paths intentionally reserve scalar decoding for returns_scalar types and otherwise produce a subclass instance backed by the containing storage, matching CPython. Code expecting field.value, subclass methods, or write-through behavior therefore breaks, so gate this extraction path on returns_scalar and retain view construction for user subclasses.

Fixed in #9395, since this PR had already merged. Primitive bit extraction is now gated by returns_scalar; user scalar subclasses retain storage-backed views and .value write-through. Checked against CPython 3.15 on Windows and Debian.

@coderabbitai The outside-diff native-call metadata finding is addressed in #9395. Native argument/result conversion and py_object result classification now use initialized metadata. The same change covers cast validation, so reassigning _type_ cannot change pointer eligibility. The mutation cases were checked against CPython 3.15 on Windows and Debian.

@1ndahous3 Thanks for addressing the native-call metadata finding in #9395, including py_object result classification and cast validation. Thanks also for checking the _type_ mutation cases against CPython 3.15 on Windows and Debian.
