Follow up #9296 by limiting ordinary and AST compile(..., "single") warning emission to the first logical input.

  • Reuse the compiler's simple/compound input distinction. Simple statements stop normal warning emission at the first logical newline, preserving semicolons and continued expressions. Compound statements retain warnings throughout their suites and clauses but exclude parser-origin escape warnings from a following statement.
  • Preserve compound numeric warnings and full-source numeric recovery after a parser warning becomes an error. Invalid-source and tokenizer-origin fallback paths are unchanged.
  • Replace the standard path's redundant collected.tokenizer_recovery value with true after its existing eligibility check.

AST Single error-precedence handling is separate in #9303; this patch does not include it.

Validation against final CPython 3.15.0 (d220409a13b77de7a6c30abe16ea90db01528edc):

  • Existing 32-case comparison: warning/error selection agreement improves from 18 to 28, with no selection regressions. Raw exact agreement remains 12/32 because diagnostic metadata differences are outside this change.
  • Existing 12 compound-lookahead and 16 fallback observations are unchanged from the historical Order parser warnings for valid source while preserving recovery boundaries #9296 baseline.
  • Canonical test_compile.TestSpecifics.test_single_statement and test_bad_single_statement both pass, with no skips or expected failures.
  • VM compiler-disabled, nonthreading, threading and test-target checks pass, as does strict VM Clippy (--all-targets --features threading -- -D warnings).

Prepared as commit 3ff651cca1779be243a16bcd8f52b107bec03ae4 on 0b0a3607648b5b01b3adfc1c06f3bec1d87f8a13. No new tests or Lib changes.

These are scoped checks, not a full workspace or complete Python-module test run.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved warning reporting for single-mode compilation by limiting parser warnings to the first logical statement. Tokenizer warnings in compound statements remain visible, and interactive and other compilation modes retain their existing behavior.
    • Standard compilation now preserves tokenizer recovery when emitting warnings after syntax and recovery checks have passed.

Keep later numeric warnings available after parser warning escalation. Preserve compound tokenizer warning emission and legacy malformed-source fallback.

📝 Walkthrough

The compiler now exposes a classifier for the first statement boundary. VM warning collection records that boundary for valid single-mode syntax, and warning emission applies boundary-based filtering. Interactive compilation does not track or pass a boundary.

Changes: Single-mode warning boundaries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify the first statement boundary
crates/compiler/src/lib.rs
Adds the public SingleModeStatementBoundary enum and single_mode_statement_boundary function. The multiple-statements error path uses the classifier to determine the statement type and newline index.
Apply boundaries during warning emission
crates/vm/src/vm/compile.rs
Warning collection records a boundary for valid single-mode syntax. Standard and AST-only compilation pass applicable boundaries to warning emission. The emitter skips events at or beyond a simple statement’s end, and skips parser-origin escape warnings at or beyond a compound statement’s end. Interactive compilation passes no boundary. Standard compilation enables tokenizer recovery on its batch-emission path.

Add Mode::Single regression coverage for the boundary filter.

The repository has no test_single_statement or test_bad_single_statement definitions. Existing warning tests use Mode::Exec, and other Mode::Single tests do not assert these warning-boundary outcomes. Add focused cases for simple boundaries, semicolons and continued expressions, compound suites and following statements, and numeric warnings after escape-warning escalation.
