Improved Windows builds with the C API enabled by making required CPython C API symbols available.
Builds now report a clear failure if the C API export definitions cannot be read.
Build Improvements
Updated automated release and cache-building configurations to enable the C API feature, making it available consistently across these build workflows.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The release and cache-building workflows now enable the capi feature. On Windows, build.rs reads a C API export manifest and passes symbol and definition-file arguments to the linker.
Changes: C API Windows exports
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Enable C API in build workflows .github/workflows/ci.yaml, .github/workflows/update-caches.yml
The release build and cache-building Cargo commands enable the capi feature.
Configure Windows C API exports rustpython-capi-exports.def, build.rs
The manifest lists 532 C API symbols. When Windows builds enable capi, the build script reads the manifest, emits /INCLUDE: arguments for its nonblank symbol lines, and passes the file with /DEF:. A read failure stops the build script.

C API builds can fail on Windows GNU and 32-bit MSVC targets. These are bounded compatibility issues outside the demonstrated CI targets; address them or explicitly accept those target limitations before merging.

- Line 49: Update the build script’s rerun-if-changed setup to also emit a
directive for the capi_src directory, alongside the per-file println! call, so
Cargo detects newly added C API source files.
- Around line 33-35: Update the capi_enabled branch around
export_capi_symbols_for_windows_exe so any export-generation error propagates
from the build script and causes a nonzero exit. Remove the warning-only
handling while preserving the successful path when generation completes.
- Line 33: Move the capi_enabled check that calls
export_capi_symbols_for_windows_exe() to the beginning of the Windows branch,
before the logo.ico existence handling and any early return. Preserve its
existing warning behavior, and remove the later duplicate call so C API exports
are generated independently of icon embedding.
- Line 64: Restrict C API export generation in the Windows branch to MSVC
targets by reading CARGO_CFG_TARGET_ENV and requiring it to equal "msvc"
alongside capi_enabled before calling export_capi_symbols_for_windows_exe.
Preserve the existing Windows resource handling for GNU targets.
- Around line 124-169: Update the Windows symbol-collection flow to include
names from define_py_check! invocations, whose generated extern functions are
not detected by extract_no_mangle_symbols. Add a dedicated extractor for both
normal and exact forms, parse the function name, insert it into the shared
BTreeSet, and invoke it alongside extract_define_exception_statics_symbols
before generating exports and /INCLUDE arguments.

Preserve xfails for builds without the C-API
For the documented default-feature test command, the three newly un-xfailed tests still have no C-API: this line enables capi only for the Run snippets and cpython tests release binary, while capi is absent from Cargo.toml's default feature list and src/lib.rs takes the non-CAPI path without it. Consequently a normal cargo run --release -- -m test test_ctypes.test_python_api (and likewise test_frame or test_threading) now fails at ctypes.pythonapi symbol lookup; make the expectation conditional on C-API availability or enable the feature in every supported test build.

Generate exports without workspace-only sources
For a published-crate build with the capi feature on Windows, this generator is unavailable: Cargo.toml:4 packages only LICENSE, Cargo.toml, and src/**/*.rs, so Cargo omits build.rs entirely (and the separately published rustpython-capi dependency is not available at crates/capi/src). The resulting executable receives neither the generated .def file nor the /INCLUDE arguments, leaving ctypes.pythonapi unable to resolve the C-API symbols despite enabling the feature; package a source-independent export list or generate it from within rustpython-capi instead of relying on the workspace layout.

I've pushed 3196c44 instead. What do you think? In the future there may be automatic options like export-executable-symbols. But I'm not sure this actually does what we need.

this is looking better than before. I also think expor-executable-symbols is the correct thing. what if we require nightly(or the env technique we must regard not really exist in stable) only for windows+msvc build?
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
let's keep other windows CI use stable, and nightly only for windows+capi. we currrently don't have nightly CI, so it will be useful not to break nightly build too

Review comments at @rustpython-capi-exports.def:
- Line 2: Restrict the Windows C-API export block in main to MSVC targets so GNU
Windows targets do not receive MSVC-specific linker arguments. Read the target
environment and call export_capi_symbols_for_windows_exe only when C-API is
enabled and the target environment is msvc.
- Line 4: Update the export handling in build.rs to prefix /INCLUDE names with
an underscore only when the target architecture is x86, preserving the existing
names for other architectures. Leave rustpython-capi-exports.def unchanged.
