Move the existing collector barrier into the VM without changing its stop, restart or ownership behavior, preparing reuse by fork. Assisted-by: dot:GPT-6.1
Prepare attached-only ownership acquisition and detached observer parking with private per-interpreter scope stacks. Lifecycle wiring follows separately; no profiler consumer is enabled by this commit. Assisted-by: dot:GPT-6.1
Integrate detach, stop-the-world, shutdown and interpreter-switch boundaries. Reuse the all-interpreter barrier for fork repair and add focused native ownership invariants. Assisted-by: dot:GPT-6.1
Add PyMutex with the lock.c protocol: LOCKED/HAS_PARKED bits, a bounded spin, direct handoff to waiters parked longer than 1 ms, and detaching while parked. Rebuild critical sections on PyMutex with the stack kept as a tagged pointer in ThreadSlot: single and two-mutex sections, recursive top-most skipping, locking skipped while the world is stopped, SuspendAll on detach/suspend/shutdown and Resume of the top-most section on attach. Fork carries the stacks into the replacement slots. Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Unlock m1 when begin2_slow returns early because the world is stopped.
begin2_mutex calls begin2_slow(..., is_m1_locked = true) after m1.lock_fast() succeeds and m2.lock_fast() fails. The world_stopped branch then stores a null c.base.mutex and returns. end2 treats a null m1 as "nothing to release", so m1 stays locked permanently. The next PyMutex::lock on m1 from any thread hangs.
Example trigger: the stop-the-world requester holds m2, either in an outer section that is not the top section or through a raw lock() (the pattern in stopped_world_skips_locking). It then enters with2(vm, m1, m2, ..) while m1 is free.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Fix the race in unlock_hands_off_to_starved_waiter.
After m.unlock() on Line 287, the unparked waiter can wake up and run m.lock(); m.unlock(); before the main thread reaches m.lock_fast() on Line 289. If the waiter wins that race, lock_fast() succeeds and the assertion fails. The main thread then still holds the lock, so the !m.is_locked() assertion on Line 291 also fails. The test is therefore flaky under CI scheduling.
Keep the waiter holding the lock until the main thread has checked ownership.

Release the first mutex before stopped-world bypass
When m1.lock_fast() succeeds but m2.lock_fast() fails, this function is entered with is_m1_locked == true. If the caller is the stop-the-world requester—for example, it already holds the higher-address m2 and opens a nested two-lock section—this branch nulls the section and returns without unlocking m1; end2 then returns on the null field, leaving m1 permanently locked and causing later operations to hang. Check the stopped-world case before either fast acquire or explicitly release the partial acquisition.

Release the first mutex before a detachable second wait
The first mutex is acquired while both section mutex fields remain null until after the potentially blocking m2.lock(); resume_top repeats the same pattern while reacquiring a pair. Since that wait detaches the thread, suspend_all cannot see or release m1; if another thread performs the new all-interpreter fork while this slot is parked, the child loses the only thread able to unlock m1 and any later access hangs. Ensure the partial acquisition is released or tracked across the detachable wait in both acquisition paths.

Avoid handing a mutex to a fork-parked waiter
After a waiter exceeds the 1 ms fairness deadline, this callback leaves the mutex in LOCKED and transfers ownership directly to that waiter. Because the waiter parks through allow_threads, a concurrent fork stop can already have changed its slot from DETACHED to SUSPENDED; it cannot finish reattaching before fork(), and only the requester survives in the child. Child repair clears parking queues but not this mutex byte, so a long-lived mutex remains locked forever; avoid direct handoff to detached waiters or explicitly repair handed-off mutex states after fork.
Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

Refresh mutex state on every spin iteration
When a contender observes LOCKED with no parked waiters, this branch loops up to 40 times without reloading v; if the owner unlocks on the first yield, the contender still performs the remaining 39 scheduler yields and cannot acquire until the loop reaches the CAS/park path. Under frequent short critical sections this turns every collision into dozens of unnecessary yields, so reload the atomic state after each yield.

Assert that a thread entering a critical section is attached, and suspend sections in do_suspend only while the slot is still ATTACHED. Assisted-by: Claude Code:claude-opus-5-5
Summary
Add
PyMutexand critical sections following the free-threaded build, as the synchronization prerequisite for a later profiler change (_lsprofuses@critical_section). No profiler API or consumer is added here.PyMutex(vm/thread/lock.rs) followslock.c: one-byte state withLOCKED/HAS_PARKEDbits, uncontended unlock without touching the parking lot, a bounded spin, single-waiter wakeup with direct handoff to waiters parked longer than 1 ms, and detaching while parked.vm/thread/critical_section.rs) followcritical_section.c/pycore_critical_section.h: the stack is a tagged pointer inThreadSlot(tstate->critical_section), withwith/with2forPy_BEGIN_CRITICAL_SECTION_MUTEX/Py_BEGIN_CRITICAL_SECTION2_MUTEX, recursive top-most skipping, and no locking while the world is stopped.SuspendAllruns before a thread leaves ATTACHED (detach, stop-the-world suspend, shutdown hang);Resumeof the top-most section runs after attach.PyOS_BeforeForkstops every interpreter). The child resets parking queues first, keeps removed thread slots alive until the shared transaction is released, then runs callbacks; incomplete child repair aborts. The surviving thread keeps its critical-section stacks across slot replacement.Differences
parking_lot_coreforbids parking frombefore_sleep, so this follows the existingRawDetachingRwLockpattern. Sections held by the waiter may be released one extra time when queue validation fails, which callers must already tolerate.ob_mutex, so a consumer embeds aPyMutexin its payload and uses the mutex form of the API.Validation
cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets(standard exclusions) andcrates/capiclippy with-D warnings;rustpython-vmclippy withoutthreading.crates/capitests passed.PyMutextests passed 30 repeated runs; the isolated fork and shutdown tests passed 5 runs each. Disabling handoff or the stopped-world skip makes the corresponding test fail.-m test test_thread test_threading test_fork1 test_gc test_ospassed (one run reported a transientenv_changed, not reproduced on rerun).Tests ran on macOS only.
