Add pyperformance workloads to continuous benchmarks - #8633
Conversation
Add dependency-free CPU-bound workloads adapted from pyperformance 1.14.0 to cover interpreter, standard-library serialization, regex, numeric, and garbage-collection paths under the existing Criterion and CodSpeed harnesses. Keep inputs deterministic and scale expensive cases for simulation while checking that benchmark execution does not leak interpreter state. Assisted-by: Codex:gpt-5.6-sol
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds 15 pyperformance-derived benchmark scripts covering standard-library and runtime workloads. It also adds documentation and Rust integration tests that execute the scripts and verify interpreter state restoration. ChangesBenchmark workload suite
Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The PR adds benchmark workloads but currently allows DeltaBlue mismatches to pass silently and ignores the configured digit count for pidigits, which can make benchmark results or configuration misleading. It is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up on these bounded issues. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Make DeltaBlue failures raise exceptions.
tests/benchmark_scripts.rs fails only when execution returns an error; it does not inspect stdout. The chain_test and projection_test checks use print on mismatches, so delta_blue(100) can benchmark incorrect results successfully. Replace these failure paths with assertions.

Use the configured digit count.
Line 56 always computes 1000 digits. add_cmdline_args forwards --digits, but this script never reads it. A configured digit count therefore has no effect. Parse the forwarded value and use DEFAULT_DIGITS as its fallback.

Avoid shadowing Python builtins.
The added benchmark code shadows the builtins id, next, and input in regex_effbot.py, float.py, and generators.py. Rename these variables and parameter to descriptive non-builtin names and update their uses.

Summary
Add 15 workloads adapted from python/pyperformance 1.14.0 to the existing file-based Criterion and CodSpeed benchmark suite.
The imported workloads cover interpreter-heavy programs (
richards, deltablue), generators, big integers and floating point, JSON and Base64 encoding, pure-Python pickle round trips, regular expressions, deepcopy, Decimal arithmetic, and cyclic garbage collection. Theirpyperfrunners and internal clocks are removed so the existing Rust benchmark harness remains the only measurement layer.Selection criteria
The cases were selected when they met all of these constraints:
Benchmarks that depend on external packages, subprocess startup, network or socket activity, or filesystem timing are intentionally excluded because they either require additional compatibility work or belong in a wall-time harness rather than the current simulation suite.
Adaptation
Expensive inputs are scaled down where needed to keep a single simulation iteration bounded while retaining the original workload shape. Random inputs use fixed seeds. The pickle cases directly select the pure-Python implementation, and the Decimal case uses a local high-precision context so benchmark execution does not alter interpreter-global state.
