Summary

  • pin the RustPython Ruff fork to tag 0.16.5-rustpython, based on Ruff 0.16.5
  • adapt the compiler, unparser, symbol table, and runtime AST conversion to Ruff 0.16.5 API changes
  • preserve duplicate-keyword validation and dict-comprehension validation behavior
  • match CPython syntax diagnostics for an unparenthesized generator used as a class base
  • use a shorter Cargo home on Windows to avoid long-path failures while checking out the Ruff git dependency
  • remove expected-failure markers for syntax and t-string concatenation cases that now pass

Dependencies

Testing

  • INSTA_WORKSPACE_ROOT=$PWD cargo test --locked --workspace --exclude rustpython_wasm --exclude rustpython-venvlauncher --exclude rustpython-capi --exclude rustpython-compiler-source
  • (cd crates/capi && cargo test --locked)
  • cargo clippy --locked --keep-going --no-default-features --features stdlib,importlib,stdio,encodings,sqlite,ssl-rustls-aws-lc,host_env --workspace --all-targets --exclude rustpython_wasm --exclude rustpython-compiler-source --exclude rustpython-venvlauncher -- -Dwarnings
  • cargo run --release --locked -- -m test test_syntax test_tstring
  • cargo test --locked -p rustpython-compiler
  • pre-commit hooks
  • zizmor with medium-or-higher findings enabled for the changed workflows

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved validation for dictionary comprehensions, including clearer errors when dictionary unpacking is used without a key.
    • Corrected handling and formatting of dictionary comprehensions during processing.
    • Preserved the parser’s original duplicate-keyword error messages.
    • Updated template-string and interpolated-string diagnostics to match CPython’s capitalization and behavior.
  • Compatibility
    • Updated Python AST handling to support current collection and source-text representations.

Review Change Stack

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The PR updates the Ruff fork dependency, adapts RustPython AST conversions, changes source-text access, handles optional dict-comprehension keys, aligns diagnostics, and configures short Cargo paths for Windows workflows.

Changes

RustPython integration updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ruff dependency and AST shape updates
Cargo.toml, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast/*, crates/codegen/src/compile.rs, crates/codegen/src/unparse.rs
The workspace uses Ruff fork tag 0.16.5-rustpython. AST conversion code adapts to optional fields, boxed slices, and ExprCall.range_start.
Source text and debug-text access
crates/codegen/src/compile.rs, crates/codegen/src/lib.rs, crates/codegen/src/unparse.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast/string.rs
Source slicing uses source_text().slice(...). Debug-text values use accessor methods.
Optional dict-comprehension keys
crates/codegen/src/compile.rs, crates/codegen/src/symboltable.rs, crates/codegen/src/unparse.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast/expression.rs, crates/vm/src/stdlib/_ast/validate.rs
Compilation, symbol scanning, unparsing, object conversion, and validation handle absent dict-comprehension keys.
Diagnostic behavior alignment
crates/codegen/src/compile.rs, crates/compiler/src/lib.rs, crates/vm/src/vm/vm_new.rs
Duplicate keyword errors retain parser messages. Mixed t-string diagnostic expectations use a capitalized message.
Windows Cargo path configuration
.github/workflows/ci.yaml, .github/workflows/release.yml, .github/workflows/update-caches.yml
Windows jobs use a short temporary Cargo home, enable Git long paths, and cache the relocated Cargo directories.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5f4bf

Reconstructed call ASTs can expose incorrect source offsets for argument lists, so this should be corrected before merge.

Align the expected message with the production diagnostic.

mixed_tstring_literal_error still returns the lowercase message at Line 4038. These expectations require "Cannot...", so both test cases fail. Update the production message to uppercase if that is the intended CPython behavior; otherwise restore the lowercase expectations.

Set the actual argument-list range.

ast::Arguments::range must span the opening and closing parentheses. The current assignment sets its start to the callee start, so l_paren_range() and inner_range() return incorrect offsets. ExprCall::range() already uses range_start for the callee and only needs arguments.end() for the call end.

Construct arguments.range with the actual opening-parenthesis offset and range.end(). Do not retain the merged range start because the conversion currently initializes it to an empty range.
