str.format: reject non-existing !b format conversion - #8597
Conversation
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds context-aware C-format parsing. Bytes formatting retains ChangesContext-aware formatting
Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change correctly rejects the unsupported !b conversion, but %r and %a formatting still ignore width, precision, and alignment in some cases, which can produce incorrectly formatted output. The PR is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or a follow-up fix. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Apply the format specification to %r and %a.
Lines 37-39 return the ASCII representation without calling spec.format_bytes. Therefore, width, precision, and alignment are ignored. For example, b"%8r" % b"x" is not padded.
Proposed fix
CFormatType::String(CFormatConversion::Repr | CFormatConversion::Ascii) => {
let b = builtins::ascii(obj, vm)?.as_bytes().to_vec();
- Ok(b)
+ Ok(spec.format_bytes(&b))

Unrelated to this PR, I just preserved original behavior from this branch. Though I'll look into it and will try to submit the change separately.

@Andrej730, understood. This behavior predates PR #8597, so it is out of scope for this change.
Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for the missing spec.format_bytes call in the bytes %r and %a paths?

Summary
The issue -
str.formatis accepting!bas a format conversion specifier, though it doesn't exist in Python.{!b}".format(42) # CPython, RustPython after this PR # ValueError: Unknown conversion specifier b # RustPython before this PR # AttributeError: 'int' object has no attribute 'decode'So it was trying to decode the value, e.g.
"{!b}".format(b"42")in RustPython would previously result in'42', not aValueError.To resolve this I've removed
BytesfromFormatConversionenum informat.rsand dropped decoding code for this enum variant.RustPython/crates/vm/src/format.rs

But since
cformat.rsis definingCFormatConversionusingFormatConversion, change needed to be propagated there too and it resulted in a bit of a refactor.RustPython/crates/common/src/cformat.rs

So I had to move
Bytesto it's own variant inCFormatType, since it's no longer part ofCFormatConversion.Most of the diff in
vm/cformat.rsis basically just dedent inspec_format_bytes, since we can'tmatchbyconversionanymore, since for strings and bytes need to have have the same handling.But since I was already working on this area, I've also used this as an opportunity to make format parsing more consistent. Previously,
'b'was parsed asBytes, regardless whether it was parsed from string or bytes. Which is incorrect, since%bis only allowed on byte strings in CPython.And to accommodate this,
spec_format_stringinvm/cformat.rshad to hardcodeunsupported format character 'b' (0x62)error for bytes specifier in the string.In this PR I added a new enum,
CFormatContext, so it allows to reject'b'during parsing.So for strings, parsing it automatically lands to
UnsupportedFormatChar,I've added a new test in
extra_teststo test regression when using!binstr.format.cformatdidn't needed any new tests, since the behavior was preserved and already covered bytest_formattests.RustPython/Lib/test/test_format.py
