compiler: end the missing-comma diagnostic past the whole second atom - #8594
Conversation
`missing_comma_expression_error` returned its span as `(index, next + 1)`,
where `next` is the byte index at which the second atom starts. The `+ 1`
is a fixed one-byte width, so the reported `end_offset` matched CPython
only when that atom was a single ASCII character:
(a b) end 5, CPython 5
(a bb) end 5, CPython 6
(a bbb) end 5, CPython 7
(a β) end 4, CPython 5
`adjacent_atom_end` already measures an atom -- identifiers including
non-ASCII ones, string literals and numbers -- and is what the first atom
is measured with three lines above. Use it for the second one too.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe compiler now extends missing-comma diagnostics across the complete second adjacent expression atom. Regression tests cover multi-character, Unicode, numeric, and bracketed atoms. ChangesMissing-comma diagnostics
Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change improves missing-comma error spans, but decimal/scientific numbers and parenthesized second atoms can still receive truncated end offsets. This is a localized diagnostic correctness issue; the PR is mergeable with explicit owner awareness or a follow-up fix. Suggested reviewers: 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Extend the second-atom span for decimal and bracketed atoms.
adjacent_atom_end still truncates valid atoms. For (a 1.2) and (a 1e+2), the numeric branch stops at . or +. For (a (bb)), the bracket branch returns immediately after (. These inputs therefore receive an incorrect SyntaxError.end_offset. Use complete numeric-literal and matching-delimiter bounds, and add regression cases for these forms.

Measured against CPython 3.14.6,
compile(src, '<t>', 'eval'):end_offset(a b)(a bb)(a bbb)(1 22)(a β)(a ββ)(a βb)(αα β)[α β]Pure ASCII is wrong too, so this is not a UTF-8 conversion problem —
(a bb)is the case that rules that reading out. A non-ASCII second atom loses an
extra column on top, because the short end lands inside the character and
source_locationthen walks back to where it starts.adjacent_atom_endalready measures an atom — identifiers includingnon-ASCII ones, string literals, and numbers — and is what the first atom
is measured with three lines above. Using it for the second one makes both
ends of the span agree about what an atom is.

fails on
(a bb)withleft: (2, 5)/right: (2, 6).cargo test -p rustpython-compiler— 21 passed, 0 failed.now match CPython, and the f-string forms (
f'{a bb}'and friends) pick upthe corrected end as well.
Lib/test/test_syntax.pydoctests for this message check only themessage text, so none of their expectations move.
Out of scope
Two pre-existing divergences turned up in the same probe and are deliberately
left alone:
(a 'xy')— CPython reportsinvalid syntaxat offset 4, we report themissing-comma message at offset 2. A message mismatch, not a span one.
(Its
end_offsetdoes become 8, which is CPython's value.)f'{a b}'— CPython reportsoffset4, we report 6. The start of thef-string form is computed elsewhere; only the end is touched here.
