MNT: Backport PR 837 #870

@copilot please backport this PR to the 12.9.x branch. (Since this PR touched some files in the .github folder, the backport bot does not work.)

@Andy-Jost unfortunately both the backport bot and the copilot failed to do this, could you back port manually please? 😓

Looks like it works now! The trick is to not assign a backport task to the copilot, but to talk to it through the chat interface so that we can select the target branch before it starts doing work, otherwise it gets confused.
