Fortune’s Creative Arts Community Celebrates Black History Month

Fortune’s Creative Arts Community Celebrates Black History Month

02/19/2026

Every Thursday at The Fortune Society, the Creative Arts community comes alive with its vibrant Music Cafe, a weekly gathering that fosters community through music, dance, and creative expression. Led by John, the Manager of Creative Arts, and Marcus, a dedicated Spiritual Activist and artist, the Music Cafe serves as a welcoming platform for individuals to showcase their talents and share their stories in a safe space.

On February 19, the Creative Arts community hosted a special edition of the Music Cafe in honor of Black History Month, inviting participants to reflect, celebrate, and express their thoughts on Black history. The event was a true celebration of Black history, culture and achievement, honoring history and encouraging creative release through performance.

Throughout the celebration, several members of the Creative Arts community performed, including Evie, a Fortune artist, and Daniel, the Arts and Literary Advocate at Fortune. They both brought their unique perspectives and talents to the forefront.

Evie sang a song honoring Fantasia Barrino, the first Black woman to win American Idol in 2004. Evie performed Fantasia’s single “I Believe” in a powerful performance about resilience and believing in oneself against all odds.

The lyrics, “I believe in the impossible; If I reach deep within my heart, overcome any obstacle; Won’t let this dream just fall apart,” are a reminder to keep trying and fighting for one’s dreams. This message appeared to deeply resonate with the Music Cafe’s attendees who sang along in support of Evie’s performance.

Daniel spoke about Dr. Mae Carol Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space in 1992 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor. He recounted the excitement and pride he felt when he learned of her remarkable accomplishment, highlighting both Dr. Jemison’s individual triumph and the incredible milestone in Black history.

“She was an astronaut, she saw the stars,” Daniel said. “She didn’t just talk about it, she did it. She actually saw the stars. And we are here celebrating Dr. Mae Jemison. And we are celebrating each and every one of you because this is Black History Month. And we did so much to become part of that. We are historical.”

The Music Cafe was a joyful and uplifting celebration of Black History. During the event, Daniel reminded everyone of their significance in Black history, and to reflect on why these celebrations are so important

“Each and every one of you is important,” Daniel said. “You come from your parents who are a part of history. Your parents are a part of history. Each and every one of you should celebrate this because you are part of Black history.”

The weekly Music Cafe is open to all in the Fortune community, taking place every Thursday from 12 PM to 1 PM. We invite anyone interested in performing to stop by, sign up and share their talents with us.
