OpenIndiana hipster and all other illumos distributions will suffer if you drop the "Solaris" support. Just to get an idea which packages in a nearly default install depend on python:
pkg uninstall: Unable to remove 'runtime/[email protected]' due to the following packages that depend on it:

  communication/im/[email protected]
  desktop/compiz/[email protected]
  desktop/[email protected]
  desktop/xdg/menu-editor/[email protected]
  developer/build/[email protected]
  developer/[email protected]
  developer/ui-designer/[email protected]
  developer/versioning/[email protected]
  diagnostic/[email protected]
  gnome/config/[email protected]
  install/[email protected]
  metapackages/[email protected]
  package/[email protected]
  package/pkg/[email protected]
  print/cups/[email protected]
  print/filter/[email protected]
  release/[email protected]
  service/gnome/[email protected]

  system/file-system/[email protected]
  system/input-method/[email protected]

  system/network/avahi/[email protected]
  system/zones/brand/[email protected]

  web/server/apache-24/module/[email protected]

Actually the package manager itself, installer, ZFS helpers, cups, the illumos build-system and and and all depend on python.
